The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
Money-Making Tips
of 12: One of the item duplication glitches described in the Useful Glitches still works in PC patch version 1.2.0416, and can be used to duplicate valuable items to sell. Read on if you're unwilling or unable to use it.
of 12: You could go to The Arena and make a bunch of bets.
of 12: A better way is to join the Thieves Guild and steal lots of stuff to sell to Ongar, the first fencing guy, in Bruma.
of 12: If you're patient and sneaky, you should be able to steal at least a couple thousand dollars' worth of stuff to sell him just by raiding houses, shops, and the castle areas in Bruma. After that, steal stuff from other cities and bring it to Bruma to sell.
of 12: Another thing you can do in Bruma is pickpocket sleeping guards in the Castle Bruma Barracks. Sneak over to where you can pickpocket a sleeping guard without anyone seeing you, then quicksave and keep trying to lift all the valuable gear off of him one piece at a time. (Quicksave when you get an item, quickrestore when you're caught.) Your Sneak skill needs to be fairly high to pull this off, so practice it up first in a dark corner of the barracks if you need to.
of 12: Also, you can join the Fighters Guild and Mages Guild to make looting most of the stuff in their guild buildings legal, and then sell all of that to honest merchants.
of 12: After you join the Fighters and Mages guilds, there's a way that you can easily kill off lots of city guards and legally loot their bodies. This can work a lot better for some players than the above tip about pickpocketing guards in their barracks areas.
of 12: Be sure to grab every ingredient item you find on all your looting expeditions and make them into cheap potions to sell. I was greatly surprised once by the fact that I had stockpiled enough ingredients to make several hundred cheap Restore Fatigue potions, which I then sold for a couple thousand gold!
of 12: There's the Imperial City misc. quest "Unfriendly Competition," in which you can get two fairly valuable magic weapons and a magic ring that you can sell to raise money fast.
of 12: There are a few other Misc. Quests that get you magic items that you can sell if you don't want to keep them.
of 12: Some of the most valuable non-leveled items you can find are the goblin totem staffs. See the "Goblin Trouble" misc. quest to learn more about them.
of 12: Once you're a fairly high level, you should not only hit dungeons to find great leveled treasure, but also pickpocket people in the various cities as they sleep. Lots of them have leveled items and gold on them.
