The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

What if I have a bounty and don't want to resort to an earlier save?

  • 1 of 6: The only way to pay off a bounty is to surrender to a guard and fork over the gold or go to jail, or talk to one of the two Thieves Guild Bounty Removal people if you've already become a member of that guild.
  • 2 of 6: If you're not a Thieves Guild member or are too far away from its bounty removers, your best option is to drop all your stolen goods somewhere and find the nearest guard so you can go to jail or pay the fine.
  • 3 of 6: When dropping your stolen stuff, it's best to put it all inside a container so it can't roll away or get kicked around.
  • 4 of 6: You can use containers in other people's houses as long as you don't let them see you take anything out of the containers, but it's usually easier to pay for a room at the local inn and put your stuff in a container in there. (Or use a container in a Mages Guild or Fighters Guild building if you're a member of those guilds.)
  • 5 of 6: Or you could let guards confiscate your stolen goods, then find the local evidence chest (usually in the castle dungeon) and pick it open to get your stuff back. It's usually very easy to sneak over to the chest and raid it without being seen. In fact, dedicated thieves should find and lockpick the evidence chest in each city early in the game -- the guards never relock them!
  • 6 of 6: Another option if your bounty is under 1000 gold is to get a guard to pay it for you.
