The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

Advanced Tips

  • 1 of 10: A whole different way to kill off guards without getting a huge bounty is to get them to follow you out of a city and to a nearby dungeon, preferably one with several tough enemies in it. The guards and dungeon enemies will often fight each other instead of concentrating on you.
  • 2 of 10: If a guard is killed by a creature that you summoned by using the Sanguine Rose staff on him (see Sanguine's Daedric Shrine Quest), that won't count against you. (Though using the staff on him will get you a 40-gold assault bounty if he's not currently hostile to you or engaged in combat with someone else.)
  • 3 of 10: The catch is that the summoned creature only lasts for 20 seconds (or until killed), and the staff can only be used ten times before it needs recharging.
  • 4 of 10: So only use the staff on a guard when he's near death, and there's no one else around to kill him for you.
  • 5 of 10: If you've got a full set of Chameleon Clothing on (see the Enchanting Tips), you won't need anyone else to help you kill guards. While totally chameleoned, attack a guard until he's near death (using sneak attacks for faster damage), then use Sanguine Rose on him to summon up a Daedra to kill him.
  • 6 of 10: The only problem will be that the guard may run around frantically since he's being attacked by an invisible foe. To help avoid this, get a bounty put on you if you don't have one, then talk to a guard and resist arrest before you start attacking him.
  • 7 of 10: Another way to kill a guard without getting a bounty is to let an atronach familiar kill him. See the hints for the "Wizard's Tower" DLC module in the separate Knights of the Nine hint file to learn how to create an atronach familiar.
  • 8 of 10: The big catch with this method is that if several guards are attacking your atronach familiar at once, he'll almost certainly be killed, even if you're using healing spells on him constantly. It can be very inconvenient to go all the way back to Frostcrag Spire to make another familiar every time one gets killed.
  • 9 of 10: If you've got the Shivering Isles expansion installed, see its separate UHS hint file to learn how to get the Ruin's Edge bow on a main quest. One of its randomly chosen attack effects is a very powerful Frenzy spell that even city guards aren't immune to, so you could totally Chameleon yourself and then shoot city guards with the bow until they start attacking each other and anyone else who's around. (This is especially fun and profitable in the castle's guard barracks.)
  • 10 of 10: Once you finish the Thieves Guild quest series, the ultimate way to kill guards is to do so while wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal. You can use weapons, spells, summoned creatures, Reflect Damage, and so on since you don't have to worry about *your* bounty going up -- only the Gray Fox's will!
