The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

What spells do I need to cast and in what order?

  • 1 of 12: Denel's translations indicate that you need Fire Damage, Frost Damage, Fortify Magicka, and Damage Magicka spells.
  • 2 of 12: You'll want basic forms of those spells, with "basic" meaning that each spell only has one effect, and it's low-level or on a scroll so as to not be very difficult to cast.
  • 3 of 12: You started the game with a basic Fire Damage spell called Flare, so that's already covered.
  • 4 of 12: Check the treasure chest near Denel to find lots of magic scrolls, some of which will have what you need on them.
  • 5 of 12: There's no scroll for Frost Damage, so if you can't cast it, you'll have to leave Vahtacen and go purchase a Frost Damage spell somewhere. See the Spell Finding list to find where all the cheapest ones are sold.
  • 6 of 12: When you have all you need, return to the pillar room and save your game.
  • 7 of 12: Since there are no real clues as to what order to cast the spells in, you could just try them in different orders to see what works.
  • 8 of 12: As it turns out, the order in which the translation dialogue topics with Denel are listed is almost the right one.
  • 9 of 12: Start by casting Fire Damage at the pillar, and then Frost Damage.
  • 10 of 12: Notice that sections of the pillar lower a bit each time you hit it with the correct spell in sequence.
  • 11 of 12: Now cast Damage Magicka at the pillar, followed by Fortify Magicka.
  • 12 of 12: NOTE: If any of the spells or scrolls you're using cast their spell on "touch" rather than "target," you'll have to be right next to the pillar when you cast it instead of standing a ways back.
