The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

The Purification

  • 1 of 13: Talk to Lachance in his private refuge to learn that the Cheydinhal sanctuary has been infiltrated somehow, and all of its members (except you, of course) have to be killed to make sure the traitor dies.
  • 2 of 13: Lachance gives you a special scroll that will summon an angry ghost for 120 seconds, plus a poisoned apple that you can trick someone into eating.
  • 3 of 13: It's legal to take stuff from the refuge area, so raid it before you leave to find some human hearts that you can use in potion-mixing, plus ten more poisoned apples in a barrel with a tough lock on it.
  • 4 of 13: TIP: Most of the containers in this area respawn, including the apple barrel, so if you can handle its lock, you've got an unlimited poisoned apple resource here!
  • 5 of 13: Use the rope ladder to climb back outside, then fast-travel to the Cheydinhal East Gate and head over to the sanctuary. Time to get started!
  • 6 of 13: To begin with, talk to M'raaj-Dar and check his shop services to see if there's anything you want to buy from him, such as more poisoned apples. His shop goods are stored in an inaccessible container, so you can't just take them after killing him.
  • 7 of 13: The poisoned apples are probably the best place to start.
  • 8 of 13: After you poison as many people as you can, wait until two or more of the survivors are together in one area (like the Training Room) and then unleash Rufio's ghost on them with that scroll Lachance gave you.
  • 9 of 13: Also, try to catch as many of them sleeping as you can, since it's easy to sneak-attack them and then deliver a devastating follow-up before they can start attacking back.
  • 10 of 13: Telaendril could be a problem since she's gone on the weekends and during parts of Tirdas and Turdas. You'll find her exact schedule on Ocheeva's body after she's been killed.
  • 11 of 13: After they're all dead and you get a journal entry acknowledging the fact, loot the sanctuary (not missing the locked chests next to the beds in the Living Quarters) and then return to Fort Farragut.
  • 12 of 13: Report to Lachance to get promoted to Silencer and start on his "dead drop" series of quests. You'll also get the reward of a special unkillable horse named Shadowmere, who will be waiting for you inside the fort's outer structure, near its main door. (Note that this is where she'll reappear if she ever runs off and leaves you.)
  • 13 of 13: NOTE: Shadowmere can be used like a pack horse. Attack her until she falls over unconscious, then access her inventory to drop off or pick up stuff.
