The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

Caught in the Hunt

  • 1 of 19: If you can't readily get this quest from the rumor mill, find Ursanne Loche and talk to her.
  • 2 of 19: She lives in Aleron Loche's house, which is the upper of the two houses just SE of the Great Chapel of Mara.
  • 3 of 19: Ask her about Aleron to learn that he's been making some unwise bets, and he hasn't yet returned from a meeting at the Lonely Suitor Lodge with his usurer.
  • 4 of 19: Head over to the lodge (near the SW corner of town) and see if you can find Aleron or the usurer, Kurdan gro-Dragol.
  • 5 of 19: You'll find Kurdan upstairs, so ask him about Aleron to see if he knows where he is.
  • 6 of 19: After you get Kurdan's disposition up to 60, he'll send you to Fort Grief to retrieve a family heirloom axe of his in exchange for Aleron's safe return from wherever he is.
  • 7 of 19: Talk to Kurdan again after that and say that you're ready to go to the boat. He'll tell you it's at the dock near the magic shop.
  • 8 of 19: You'll find the boat right behind "A Warlock's Luck," which is just east of the north end of the bridge that's near the lodge.
  • 9 of 19: Stand next to the boat and point at it so that the "activate this object" cursor appears, then hit the Activate key to be taken straight to Fort Grief's island.
  • 10 of 19: When you arrive, find the gate a ways east of the dock that leads into the fort's ruins.
  • 11 of 19: To open the gate, use the turn handle on the ground a little to the right of it.
  • 12 of 19: Inside, you'll find Aleron Loche pacing around.
  • 13 of 19: Talk to him to learn that the story of a family heirloom axe is a hoax, and you were tricked into getting yourself trapped in the fort so that you'll have to enter the Hunter's Run area and try to find the key.
  • 14 of 19: The game freezes you while Kurdan kills Aleron, so there's no way to save him.
  • 15 of 19: Have a weapon or spell ready to go when Kurdan approaches you and talks to you -- that way, you can immediately attack him when he's done talking.
  • 16 of 19: Then get out a bow and start sniping the archer who's running around on the upper floor (or run up the stairs and get after him with your melee weapon).
  • 17 of 19: Search Kurdan's body to find the real gate-opening key, then go back into the Hunter's Run and open the nearby locked gate with it.
  • 18 of 19: Use the big turn handle past the gate to open the fort's outer gate, then go back outside and leave the fort at last.
  • 19 of 19: Take the little boat back to Bravil and report the bad news to Ursanne Loche to get a Speechcraft skill book and finish the quest.
