The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
Skill-Practicing Tips
of 10: After sneaking close enough to the goblin for your Sneak skill to start going up, sneak-walk back and forth between the cheap junk containers and the door that leads back to the Imperial Substructure -- this will rapidly build up your Sneak skill with no chance of the goblin seeing you.
of 10: To automate that process, go to the Substructure door, face either corner, press the Auto Move key so you'll sneak-walk into the corner constantly, and check back later to see how much your Sneak skill has gone up.
of 10: You can do the exact same thing while not in Sneak mode in order to build up your Athletics skill, but it tends to go up more slowly than Sneak does, and it isn't nearly as important to practice right now.
of 10: If you have the time to supervise the above process, jump a lot while running/sneaking into the corner in order to increase your Acrobatics skill. You could also cast Heal Minor Wounds a lot to earn points in the Restoration skill.
of 10: After you're through with all that and move on, you can practice Block and the two armor skills by simply letting goblins and rats beat up on you for a long time, casting Heal Minor Wounds every now and then to keep your health up.
of 10: If you're practicing Heavy Armor that way, equip all the heavy armor you've found so far and let the enemies attack you over and over. Likewise with the Light Armor skill. To practice Block, equip a shield and hold it up constantly in Block mode while under attack.
of 10: The best way to practice Acrobatics is in a "short corner" where you have room to stand up, but not enough room to actually jump. There are many such corners in the Tutorial quest dungeons, so find one, use the Auto Move key to run constantly into it, and then hit the Jump key over and over as fast as you can. If you picked a good corner, you'll be able to "jump" every time the Jump key is pressed. This makes your Acrobatics skill increase a lot faster than if you were in a spot where you actually could jump up a ways, since you'd then have to wait until you came back down before you could jump again.
of 10: You can really get a *lot* of skill increases with the above tips, and if you make several of those skills into major skills later on, you'll have a whole lot of level-ups pending when you finally finish the Tutorial quest and make it outside.
of 10: If you do this, you can't very easily control what attribute increases you get per level-up, but you should always get at least one +4 or +5 bonus, and you can always increase Luck. Also, don't forget to buy 5 points of skill training before each level-up so that you can keep increasing your skills that way, too.
of 10: If you want to guarantee that you'll get a good Endurance multiplier on your first few level-ups (so you'll get a lot more hit points early on), practice Block and/or Heavy Armor in the above-mentioned way until you get a total of 10 skill increases. If both of those are going to be major skills for you (which is strongly recommended), that's enough for a level-up. However, it isn't enough for a second x5 attribute multiplier, so practice another above-mentioned skill up 10 points during that process.
