The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

Character Creation Tips

  • 1 of 6: As in Morrowind, every character starts the game with every skill at some level, so every character can eventually become a very powerful fighter / mage / thief. However, there are no super-special development strategies in Oblivion (like my "Creep Train" method in Morrowind), so it's much more important to create a starting character who's strongest in the kinds of skills you'll be using most.
  • 2 of 6: The easiest way to ensure that is to custom-create your character's class when you get the chance to. Make the seven skills that are most important to you into his major skills.
  • 3 of 6: However, note that specialization bonuses are only given to major skills that "match up" with your chosen specialization (combat, magic, or stealth). Also, different races have bonuses that you should pay attention to so you can choose the best race to go along with your chosen class.
  • 4 of 6: Unless you want to start out with a split-class-style character, here are the best choices for you.

Pure Fighter -- Race: Orc or Redguard, Class: Warrior, Birthsign: The Warrior
Pure Mage -- Race: High Elf or Breton, Class: Mage, Birthsign: The Mage or The Atronach
Pure Thief -- Race: Khajiit, Class: Thief, Birthsign: The Thief
  • 5 of 6: I also have a special recommendation for a custom class that combines some of the best features of the "pure" classes.
  • 6 of 6: You should probably use one of the above characters the first time you play the game, then custom-make a character the second time you play, since you'll then have a better idea of what your first character's most irritating weaknesses were and how to adjust for them.
