Why won't anyone talk to me?
1 of 3: Most of the odalisques (that is, the ladies of the harem) won't give you the time of day, and if you try to talk to them they'll sneer. So don't waste your time with them.
2 of 3: The only people who'll talk to you are Aicha the servant, Souafi the "governess," the favorite, and Mustapha the gardener.
3 of 3: And be aware that Souafi and the favorite are easy to offend. Try flattery, the universal language, to get what you want.
