The Orange Box: Portal Hints
How can I get past the two hallway turrets?
of 10: First, remember that taking some fire is okay as long as you don't take enough to die. Your health (which isn't shown unless you use the cheat mentioned in the Death by Turret Note) will regenerate rapidly while you're not under fire.
of 10: Another thing to know is that putting a storage cube on the floor right in front of a turret won't block the turret's red laser beam, but it will partially block its fire.
of 10: So instead of dropping cubes on top of the two turrets in the metal-lined hallway, you're going to be dropping cubes right in front of them.
of 10: This is a bit trickier to do, so save your game before trying each one.
of 10: Fire an orange portal into a wall that's out of the turrets' view, then fire a blue portal onto the ceiling over the spot that's right in front of the nearest turret. (You'll be aiming at a spot near the red X, but not right on it.)
of 10: Carefully drop a cube through the orange portal so that it lands (and stays) right in front of the turret.
of 10: Then peek around the corner in the other direction long enough to fire a blue portal at the ceiling over the other turret, remembering that you want the portal a bit closer to you than the red X.
of 10: Do the same cube-drop thing to get a cube positioned in front of that turret.
of 10: If the cubes didn't both drop into position perfectly (and they rarely do), then crouch-walk up to each one and gently nudge it into the best position.
of 10: Note that nudging the second cube will put you in range of the nearest turret in the nearby room, so make sure it doesn't get to shoot you enough times consecutively to kill you.
