The Orange Box: Portal Hints
Terminal Velocity (PORTAL_INFINITEFALL)
of 12: For this achievement, you'll need to fall at least 30,000 feet.
of 12: Before you can do this, you'll have to get the portal gun upgrade in Chamber 11. See the Chapter 4: Testchamber 10 hints for details on that.
of 12: In any room with a portal-friendly floor and ceiling, open a blue portal in the ceiling and an orange portal directly underneath it on the floor.
of 12: This is a bit easier to do in rooms with low ceilings, since you can line the portals up better.
of 12: Also, it may help to open both portals as close to a corner as you can while facing that corner.
of 12: Look down and carefully move forward into your floor portal, and you should start on a never-ending fall through the portals. If not, you may need to reposition them slightly.
of 12: Also, be sure to have the "Portal funnel" option checked in the Portals section of the game's Options menu. If you don't, you'll hit the floor and stop before long no matter how carefully you drop into the floor portal.
of 12: Another problem arises if the room is *really* short, like with the side platform in Chamber 11 where you first press a red button on a post. No matter how carefully you set up your portals, you'll always hit the floor and stop fairly soon, even with the "Portal funnel" option on.
of 12: However, you could try holding down the Duck key as you move into the floor portal, then keep holding it down as you fall (or weight it down with something). That should allow you to fall continuously without hitting the floor.
of 12: Once you get your portals set up for an eternal fall, let your character fall continuously through them for awhile, then lean on a movement key until you hit the floor and stop.
of 12: If you waited long enough, you'll have gotten the achievement.
of 12: I've gotten it several times by setting up an infinite fall in the above-mentioned side platform in Chamber 11 and letting it go for about six minutes.
