How can I create a Volta battery?

  • 1 of 14: You can find information on the composition of a Volta battery in some documentation that Captain Nemo kept in Granite House.
  • 2 of 14: The data is in the Captain's journal...
  • 3 of 14: ... which is on the worktable in the middle storage room in Granite House.
  • 4 of 14: The chemical composition of a Volta battery -- the first electrical battery ever created, in 1799 -- consists of two metal plates (the electrodes), immersed in a chemical solution.
  • 5 of 14: The first Volta battery used copper and zinc for the electrodes...
  • 6 of 14: ... but according to the Captain's journal, silver works just as well as zinc.
  • 7 of 14: In Volta's first battery, the two metals were separated by flannel soaked in a weak acid.
  • 8 of 14: If you've not tried this experiment as a school science project, know that lemon juice works well as the weak acid.
  • 9 of 14: And any cottony material will work.
  • 10 of 14: ... such as clean cloth.
  • 11 of 14: And we will also need a "container", or shell, for the new "battery".
  • 12 of 14: What do you have in your inventory that might be large enough, and hollow enough, to "store" the other items?
  • 13 of 14: A medium-sized piece of bamboo will do nicely.
  • 14 of 14: Combine the materials (silver coins, copper coins, cotton, lemon, medium bamboo) in the inventory to get a Volta battery.
