Sentinel: Descendants in Time Hints
How can I solve the puzzle with the oddly-shaped pieces?
of 30: Begin by clicking on any of the polygon-shaped pieces on the pad.
of 30: What happens?
of 30: Try clicking on more of the polygon shapes. Each time you click, several things happen.
of 30: An asterisk symbol is placed in the next empty square (of the row of seven squares above the pad).
of 30: Also, any balls that were in either of the side trays prior to clicking on a key are dumped out...
of 30: ... and more new balls come down into one or the other (or both) of the two side trays.
of 30: What is the maximum number of balls that will come into any one tray?
of 30: The trays hold a maximum of 5 balls.
of 30: What is the minimum number of balls that will come into any one tray?
of 30: For a few of the polygon-shaped keys, either the left or right tray may remain empty.
of 30: You should also have noticed the two symbols above each of the two side trays.
of 30: The two symbols are reminiscent of portions of the seven symbols projected onto the ceiling from the crystal stand.
of 30: In fact, all of those seven symbols are made up of some number of circles...
of 30: ... and some number of spokes.
of 30: None of the symbols have more than 5 circles...
of 30: ... and none have more than 5 spokes.
of 30: Perhaps you've already drawn out the seven symbols (although they can still be seen, even when you are standing in front of this puzzle).
of 30: To see the symbols on the ceiling, back away from the puzzle, swivel to your left, and look up.
of 30: Now, rather than think of the symbols in terms of their actual representation graphically, you might describe them in "shorthand" by simply indicating how many spokes, and how many circles, are in each.
of 30: For instance, the first symbol has 4 spokes inside 2 circles.
of 30: If we use a "shorthand" method of writing the number of spokes and circles as "S:C:", where "S" indicates the number of spokes, and "C" indicates the number of circles, this first symbol would be represented as "4:2". The other six symbols can be represented, using this shorthand notation, as follows: 1:1 3:3 2:4 4:2 1:5 5:4
of 30: How might that help us solve the puzzle of the polygon-shaped pieces?
of 30: Remember that each time you press one of the polygon-shaped keys, some number of balls roll down into the channel with an asterisk at the top, and some number of balls roll down into the channel with a series of concentric circles at the top.
of 30: Each key, then, can be considered to represent -- in almost an exact kind of "shorthand" -- a combination of "spokes and circles".
of 30: So how could that information apply to the solution to this puzzle?
of 30: Given the seven symbols projected by the crystals, and the "spoke-circle" combinations mentioned above (as well as the fact that there are only seven possible keys that you can press before the puzzles resets itself), it would seem most likely that you will need to decipher the seven keys to press based on the "spoke-circle" combination that matches that of the crystals.
of 30: As you work on the puzzle, make note of every combination of balls that are produced by every key that you press. This will take several cycles through the seven symbols above the keypad, as there are 26 keys to decipher. You might even want to jot down the results of each key press in the same notation as you did with the crystals: "spokes:circles", meaning that if one key press results in two balls on the left (spoke) side and three on the right (circle) side, that key would be noted as "2:3".
of 30: None of the keys produce identical results; they are all unique. Thus, for example, the first crystal produced a "4:2" combination (i.e., 4 spokes, 2 circles); and only one key on the keypad will produce a "4:2" combination (i.e., 4 balls on the left, 2 balls on the right).
of 30: You'll need to locate each of the keys that produce combinations that match the seven crystals -- and ONLY press those keys, and in the correct order.
of 30: After you have entered the correct 7-key sequence to solve the puzzle, watch the end-game cut-scene to find out... well, what exactly DO you find out???
