Sentinel: Descendants in Time Hints

How do I know how to set each of the columns?

  • 1 of 33: Since it certainly seems to be related to the five colored circles on each column, let's start there.
  • 2 of 33: What five colors are on each column?
  • 3 of 33: The colors are blue, red, green, purple, and yellow.
  • 4 of 33: Have you seen anything else on the island that would "link" you to those colors?
  • 5 of 33: Have you explored inside the center building yet?
  • 6 of 33: Make sure you check on the little table, at the top of the stairway to your left, after you enter the center building.
  • 7 of 33: There is a book there, opened to a page showing some colored marks.
  • 8 of 33: And those marks are the same five colors...
  • 9 of 33: ... and are right beside -- and even have a drawn-in pointer to -- a picture of one of the "umbrella stand" columns with its five discs (but uncolored).
  • 10 of 33: So those marks must provide some clue as to how to set each of the columns.
  • 11 of 33: Note that there are a different number of marks for each of the colors.
  • 12 of 33: There are four red marks, 3 yellow marks, 5 green marks, 2 purple marks, and 1 blue mark.
  • 13 of 33: How might that help decipher how to set each of the columns?
  • 14 of 33: It might help, if you drew a sketch of all of the columns, showing the order of the five colors on each.
  • 15 of 33: Also, ask yourself if there is any other outstanding feature about the columns -- particularly as you raise and lower them using their control wheels.
  • 16 of 33: Note that each of the colored circles is set in a square piece of wood...
  • 17 of 33: ... that closely matches the base of the "umbrella stand".
  • 18 of 33: And, in fact, there is a square cutout at the base of each stand.
  • 19 of 33: There must be a reason for that...
  • 20 of 33: ... and maybe it is the "missing link" to how to correlate the color clues in the book with each of the column settings.
  • 21 of 33: Try a few different approaches to how you might link the clues in the book with the various columns.
  • 22 of 33: On each column, the colored disk that is set into the square cutout on the base seems to be the most "highlighted" of any of the colors showing.
  • 23 of 33: Then maybe the clues in the book are telling us which color on each column goes into the square cutout at the base.
  • 24 of 33: But why do each of the clue colors have a different number of "marks"?
  • 25 of 33: It's almost as if there is an implication that links the clue color, the clue number (i.e., number of marks for any given color), and the square cutout at the base of each column.
  • 26 of 33: And, in fact, that is exactly correct.  The number of marks for each "clue color" indicates a COUNT -- counting from the top of each columns color discs -- that should equal the color to be displayed in the square cutout at the base of the stand.
  • 27 of 33: Let's use an illustration: the first clue in the book showed 4 red marks -- ergo, "red in the 4th position".
  • 28 of 33: And if you look closely at the columns (or your notes, if you wrote down each of the columns' color order), you will see that only one column has a red disc in the fourth position from the top.
  • 29 of 33: Proceed to that column (it is the one that, from the top down, is colored purple, yellow, green, red, blue).
  • 30 of 33: Now, click on the control wheel enough times to place the red disc into the square cutout at the base of the column.
  • 31 of 33: And that's how you set each of the columns!
  • 32 of 33: Once you know the color order from each of the five columns, you will discover that there is only one way to match the colors with the clues from the book.
  • 33 of 33: The final solution is to discover which column has a red in the 4th position from the top, which one has a yellow in the 3rd position from the top, which one has a green in the 5th position from the top, which one has a purple in the 2nd position from the top, and which one has a blue in the top position.
