How does grab mode work?
1 of 4: Instead of using the Activate key to try to put an item into your inventory, you use the Grab key (Z on the PC) to pick up the item and hold it in front of you.
2 of 4: You can hold onto the item as long as you keep the Grab key pressed, and can drop it by releasing the Grab key. You can also throw an item by releasing the Grab key while rotating your view or moving forward.
3 of 4: Grab mode is usually useless due to the fact that if you're seen grabbing an owned item, you're accused of stealing it just the same as if you'd put it in your inventory.
4 of 4: You can also use Grab mode to move some things (logs, dead bodies, etc.) that you can't ever put into your inventory. This is useful if the thing is covering up something you're trying to get to.
