The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles Hints

Retaking the Fringe

  • 1 of 13: All of your map markers within the Fringe have been wiped out, so you'll have to fast-travel to the Gates of Madness marker and then enter the Fringe through one of the two gates.
  • 2 of 13: Inside, you'll get a journal entry telling you to see what's happening at Passwall, so head down the path that leads there.
  • 3 of 13: You'll discover that several golden saints or dark seducers (depending on whether you replaced Thadon or Syl) are under attack by Knights of Order.
  • 4 of 13: Help them kill off the knights, then save your game and talk to their leader.
  • 5 of 13: When she asks how to deploy the troops to battle the next wave of knights, you can just say that you trust her judgment. If the battle goes badly, you can restore your save and try positioning the troops yourself to make things go better. However, her default arrangement should work pretty well.
  • 6 of 13: You'll get a journal entry when the battle is over, after which you should talk to the saint/seducer leader.
  • 7 of 13: She deduces that Xeddefen contains the key to defeating this invasion, and it's up to you to go in there and do something about it.
  • 8 of 13: Follow your quest arrow south to the Xeddefen ruins area, where you'll start encountering knights again.
  • 9 of 13: Make your way to the SE end of the ruins, where you'll find a door leading into the starting Xeddefen area.
  • 10 of 13: Below are detailed hints for each section of Xeddefen that you have to go through.
  • 11 of 13: After talking to Shelden, fast-travel back to Passwall and talk to the saint/seducer leader. (Use the quest arrow to help find her if you need to.) Note that you may need to help kill some more knights first.
  • 12 of 13: After that, you'll have to go back up to the old Gatekeeper's area and through one of the madness gates in order to get all your world map markers restored.
  • 13 of 13: Fast-travel to New Sheoth's palace and talk to Sheogorath to finish up the quest.
