The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Game Add-Ons (DLC) Hints
What are some of the Soul Cairn's general features?
of 9: As you explore, you can ignore the non-hostile souls and the wisp-like things, but you'll have to fight the skeleton-like creatures (boneman, mistman, wrathman) that you periodically encounter.
of 9: There are tubular plant-like growths scattered about that you can harvest to get a food item called "soul husk." They can be eaten to interrupt soul drain effects and to gain a temporary +10% to magic resistance.
of 9: The soul drain effects that the soul husks interrupt are perpetrated by giant floating soul gems. You'll see them hovering over structures in several different places, and there's usually a treasure chest directly underneath them. As you go for the treasure chest, the giant soul gem will rapidly drain your health. As soon as the drain starts, bring up your inventory and eat a soul husk item to put a stop to it.
of 9: The circular crystal crater-like things that shoot off sparks will heal you when you jump onto them, though it is possible to use up their charge (in which case they won't be shooting off sparks anymore).
of 9: Some small, round stone basins with purple energy designs in them will teleport you somewhere if you jump into them. You'll usually end up in a nearby elevated position that you couldn't have gotten to otherwise, and will find some items lying about. There's usually not a return teleporter, so you'll need to drop back down to the ground carefully to avoid taking damage.
of 9: There are large cracks in the ground outlined with light-brown-and-white-colored rock called soul fissures. You can go up to a soul fissure and activate it once to fill the largest empty soul gem in your inventory.
of 9: Several structures have doorways that are barred. Look around for two small standing stones that have large round holes near their tops. To lower the bars, fire something (arrow, bolt, or spell) at the stones' round holes. Note that the stones aren't always easy to see from next to the bars, so you may have to hunt for them.
of 9: A few structures have tall metal rods sticking up out of them. Go up to one of the rods to find an interactive lightning attractor gadget near its base. Activate it if you have a greater or grand soul gem in your inventory that you'd like to convert into a black soul gem. You can only use each lightning attractor once, and several of the local skeletons will attack you when you do.
of 9: There are invisible magical force fields that are used to contain you within the game-defined region while letting you see way off into the distance (to make the region seem even more huge than it is, no doubt).
