The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Game Add-Ons (DLC) Hints
Dawnguard
1 of 7: Start by traveling to Stendarr's Beacon, which is a ways east and a bit south of Riften. See the Riften section of the World Map Exploration Guide in the main Skyrim hint file if you need help getting to the beacon.
2 of 7: After you arrive, head east down the sloping path that's next to the beacon, then move toward the quest arrow shown on the compass to find the entrance to Dayspring Canyon. (Note that the quest arrow shown on the world map may be in the wrong place, so don't try to navigate by it).
3 of 7: Move along the canyon until you come to a lake, where you may encounter a guy named Agmaer. Talk to him if you want to, but he'll run on ahead to the fort without you if you linger to enjoy the scenery (or the mudcrabs).
4 of 7: Follow the path along until you discover Fort Dawnguard, then keep going until you find Durak either on the path or practicing with his crossbow in an area next to the path.
5 of 7: Talk to him and agree to join up if you haven't already, then wait if necessary for him to start shooting his crossbow at a large tree stump. After he does, ask him what he's shooting with to get your own crossbow and some bolts. To get more bolts, take the ones he shoots into the tree stump.
6 of 7: Continue along the path until you reach the steps that lead up to the fort's entry doors. Optionally talk to Celann, then go inside and over to where Isran is talking to Vigilant Tolan.
7 of 7: Listen to the conversation if you want, or interrupt and talk to Isran right away. Say you want to join the Dawnguard, then wait for Vigilant Tolan to talk to you. After he does, you'll get the next quest. (Note that he'll give you a crossbow and some bolts if you didn't get one from Durak.)
