The Companions
Your first encounter with the Companions will probably be in the field near the Pelagia Farm while on your way to Whiterun. They'll be fighting a giant, and you can help out or just stand and watch. Talk to them afterwards, then find the building in Whiterun that's called Jorrvaskr.
