Is there a way to get Vald to give me his key without a fight?
1 of 7: Yes, but you mustn't approach the gate mentioned in the above hints, since you won't want him turning hostile.
2 of 7: Go left from the manor's front door until you find an unlocked gate on your right.
3 of 7: Go through it, then go down to the locked gate that leads into Riftweald Manor's backyard.
4 of 7: Wait for Vald to walk over to the gate, then talk to him and try to persuade him to let you into Mercer's house. It'll require a very high Speech skill to succeed.
5 of 7: If you can't pass the persuade check, you'll have to find Maven Black-Briar. She's usually in the inn, the open-air market area, or her manor.
6 of 7: Ask her about erasing Vald's debt to learn that she'll only do so if you retrieve a certain quill for her.
