The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints

Smithing

  • 1 of 6: As you explore and loot towns and dungeons, save up all the unenhanced armor and weapons you find, plus all the miscellaneous items that can be used in smithing.
  • 2 of 6: When you've got a bunch, go to a forge area that has all of the smithing devices, such as the one near the city gate in Whiterun. Start by turning all of your animal hides into leather and all of your ore into ingots. After that, you may want to turn some of your leather into leather strips.
  • 3 of 6: If you have some smithing items left over after making whatever equipment you want with the blacksmith's forge, use them at a workbench or grindstone to improve the quality of your new equipment. Or if you've saved up a lot of equipment, you can use your smithing supplies to improve it.
  • 4 of 6: Remember that you can steal and pickpocket lots of weapons and armor from people in the various cities, and the merchants who sell smithing items will get a new stock in every now and then.
  • 5 of 6: There's no need to buy or use any rare or expensive smithing items just to practice your skill. Making and improving a lot of iron, leather, and hide equipment can get you up to skill level 100 fairly quickly. (Note that iron daggers, leather bracers, and hide bracers take the least amount of supplies to make.)
  • 6 of 6: After you get your Smithing skill to 100, you'll want to find ways to maximize the effects of improvements that you make to equipment. See the Item-Crafting Tips.
