The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints

What all miscellaneous items can be used in smithing?

  • 1 of 7: Leather, leather strips, and the various types of ingots are the main things to save up. With them, you can create new equipment at blacksmith's forges, and improve it at workbenches and grindstones.
  • 2 of 7: Tanning racks can be used to turn animal pelts of all kinds into leather, so save up all the pelts you get for that. You can also use tanning racks to turn leather into leather strips whenever you're needing those.
  • 3 of 7: Smelters are used to turn all types of ore into ingots, so save up all the ore you find or mine yourself. Smelters can also turn various pieces of dwarven metal (including struts, plate metal, and solid metal) into dwarven metal ingots. (Note that the pieces called "dwemer scrap metal" won't work for some reason.)
  • 4 of 7: NOTE: Using smelters and tanning racks doesn't increase your Smithing skill, so there's no need to wait until your next Smithing practice session to do that sort of thing.
  • 5 of 7: Besides weapons and armor, you can also create jewelry at forges. Save up all the jewels you can get for that (garnets, rubies, sapphires, etc.), plus gold and silver ingots.
  • 6 of 7: After you get some of the Smithing perks that let you make better armor types (and when you want to improve better equipment that you find), you'll need refined moonstone (elven and glass armor), refined malachite (glass armor), dragon scales and dragon bones (dragon armor), and Daedra hearts (Daedric armor). You should start saving those items up early so you'll have several on hand when you need them.
  • 7 of 7: Note that you'll also need chaurus chitin if you ever want to improve falmer-brand equipment.
