The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints

Stockpiling Tips

  • 1 of 7: You'll find lots of good stuff to take (and steal) in all of the towns and dungeons, and having a place to stockpile stuff that you want to keep but not carry around everywhere is an early necessity.
  • 2 of 7: The best places to stockpile items are in containers inside houses that you've bought, but it'll probably be awhile before you can afford to buy a house.
  • 3 of 7: In the meantime, the barrels that are all over the place in towns are good to put stuff in. You should just use the outside barrels, since most indoor barrels are owned, and anything you put in them will probably become owned (meaning it would be stealing to take it back out).
  • 4 of 7: WARNING: Those barrels will eventually respawn, deleting everything you put into them, so don't leave anything really rare or valuable in them for very long. It's a good idea to do Main Quests until you're able to buy a house in Whiterun, then move all your stored stuff into its containers. Or do Thieves Guild faction quests until you gain access to the cistern area, since none of its guild chests ever respawn.
  • 5 of 7: After you clear out a dungeon and are ready to leave, collect all the loot you can find, then dump what you can't carry in the container that's nearest the exit. You can then take it all to merchants or storage sites one load at a time.
  • 6 of 7: One thing that can help with that is to find and create potions that fortify your carry weight. Also, if you had a follower with you, he could help by carrying lots of stuff for you.
  • 7 of 7: Or if you have a horse with you, you can carry all of your loot away at once, even if you don't have any followers or potions. Your encumbrance doesn't make any difference when fast-traveling on horseback.
