The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Destroy Malyn Varen's soul.
1 of 6: After Varen stops talking to you, he'll retreat and summon three dremora to attack you.
2 of 6: Stay at your end of the pathway and try to kill all of the dremora before Varen decides to come after you himself.
3 of 6: Use all of your potions and spells if necessary to kill Varen, then stand and wait to be teleported back to Skyrim.
4 of 6: The quest will end, and your reward will depend on who you gave the star to.
5 of 6: If you gave it to Aranea, you'll get Azura's Star as a reward, and Aranea will become a follower when you talk to her. If you gave it to Nelacar, you'll get the Black Star instead of Azura's Star (and no followers).
6 of 6: Remember that Azura's Star can hold any captured soul except for an NPC's (bandit, town guard, etc.), and the Black Star can supposedly only hold NPC souls (though it seemed to work with any type soul when I played).
