The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
How can I get that gate open?
of 11: Check the dead scholar to see if he has any clues on him.
of 11: Take his "Notes on Yngol Barrow" book and read it in the "books" section of your inventory.
of 11: The second page has a little four-verse poem that will help you set the room's three rotating pillars.
of 11: The first clue refers to a man in his throne. There is a throne nearby, but there's no rotating pillar in its alcove, so there's nothing to do for that clue.
of 11: The next clue refers to a whale in the sea. Which rotating pillar alcove might correspond to the sea?
of 11: The one to the right of the throne alcove has lots of water in it, so it's probably the one. Rotate its pillar to show a whale symbol.
of 11: Of the next two clues, the easiest one to figure out is the last one, so do it first.
of 11: It refers to a snake in the weed, so find a weedy alcove.
of 11: It's directly across the room from the "sea" alcove. Turn its pillar to show a snake.
of 11: That leaves the alcove to the right of it to be the "sun's sky" that the third clue refers to, so turn its pillar to show the bird symbol.
of 11: You can now use the lever to open the gate.
