Still Life Hints

What are some suggestions for beginning to solve this puzzle?

  • 1 of 11: One approach would be to work it backwards.
  • 2 of 11: You must end with exactly 4L of water in the tank.
  • 3 of 11: You cannot fill the tank to any other mark than its full capacity -- 5L.
  • 4 of 11: Therefore, you will need to take a completely-filled tank, and remove 1L from it.
  • 5 of 11: The only way to remove anything less than the full 5L is to have a bucket placed under the tank when you turn the lower spigot.
  • 6 of 11: And the only way to drain a single liter from the tank is if the bucket already contains 2L, while the tank contains 5.
  • 7 of 11: Now you can begin from the "front end" of the puzzle, and try to figure out how to get exactly 2L of water into the bucket.
  • 8 of 11: The only way to begin the puzzle is to place the totally empty bucket under the totally empty tank.
  • 9 of 11: And the only thing that can be done with the empty tank is to completely fill it to its capacity.
  • 10 of 11: After that, the only thing you can do is to drain 3L of water from the tank into the bucket.
  • 11 of 11: The remainder of the solution, then, must be to get from this point -- i.e., 3L of water in the bucket, and 2L of water in the tank -- to the point above, with 2L of water in the bucket, and 5L of water in the tank.
