Tales of Monkey Island Hints
How do I win a swordfight?
of 8: First you need a sword.
of 8: The Swordfighter has two, and he's only using one. Take the one sticking out of his head (ew!) to find out how it got there.
of 8: Now use the sword on Mo to start a round of insult swordfighting with her. This might not be too hard --
of 8: -- except the Swordfighter jumps into the action too. This means that in every round, your response needs to simultaneously insult the Swordfighter and encourage Mo.
of 8: For example, here's one exchange: Mo: My career as a pirate hunter was about as successful as my career as a marathon runner. Swordfighter: Nobody's ever drawn blood from me, and no one ever will. Guybrush: You run THAT fast?
of 8: So with every exchange, read your possible responses carefully. There'll always be one that's just insulting, one that's just encouraging, one that's both, and a request for them to repeat themselves in case you forgot what they said.
of 8: Pick the right answer three times, and Mo will rally, defeat the Swordfighter, and agree to give you whatever help you need.
of 8: In case you're having trouble, here are the correct answers for all the exchanges I ran into. There are probably more; these are just the ones I heard.
