The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal Hints
Combat Tips
of 8: Many of the combat tips you learned in the main Morrowind game can be applied here. For basic tips, please refer back to those hints. However, a few things will change in Mournhold, and you may need to adapt your skills accordingly. Read ahead for some of these tips.
of 8: For one, more creatures and NPCs tend to have some degree of skill in Reflect -- whether it's a spell or a natural ability or an enchanted item. In some cases, you may try casting a Dispel on them (make sure to pick a Dispel that targets your opponent, not yourself) to see if you can get rid of that. In theory, natural abilities and enchanted items can*not* be dispelled, just actual cast spells, but it never hurts to try.
of 8: If you can't stop the Reflect, be careful to avoid enchanted weapons whose effects can come back on you. I sometimes preferred weapons that cast Fortify Skill on myself for a few seconds (like a weapon or armor skill -- you can learn this in the Mournhold Temple), cast Chameleon on myself, or even healed *me* on strike (a perfectly legitimate way to enchant a weapon, even if counterintuitive) just to have a backup weapon at times. No sense using a weapon that's completely unenchanted if you can help it.
of 8: Also, if you can't get rid of a Reflect spell, or even if you just find that your target has a high magicka resistance, you may also have to give up on your own offensive spells. Make sure you have appropriate weapons for your skills. Long blades seem to be particularly common here in Mournhold. Concentrate on using your magicka for protective and healing spells in these cases.
of 8: Similarly, having your own Spell Absorption or Reflect going is helpful. The Staff of Magnus from Ajira's quest in the Mages Guild of Vvardenfell is good here, as is the Flamemirror Robe from the Tribunal side quest The Summoner. The Robe of the Drake's Pride (on Senise Thendo in Tel Aruhn's Tower Living Quarters) and Marara's Ring (worn by Marara in the Drethan Ancestral Tomb in Ald Daedroth) both have fairly good constant Reflect effects on them. To learn about more good constant effect items that are available, see the Constant Effect Item Lists in this hint file and in the ones for Morrowind and Bloodmoon.
of 8: Paralysis is also common -- so be prepared with some sort of resistance or cure. Notice that a few of the local potion ingredients have Resist Paralysis as an effect.
of 8: Chameleon can also be a helpful spell to have, particularly in the 75-100% range, as this allows you to hide from your opponents more or less completely. They may not even see you approach, and if they do, they'll have a hard time focusing on you to follow you around (giving you a chance, for example, to heal and come back to strike again). The Amulet of Shadows from Jeline's side quest in Gnisis back on Vvardenfell is one way to get this spell at such a high level.
of 8: You may also find yourself needing more healing than you're used to. As soon as I had a chance, I created an enchanted item that did a few points of constant Restore Health. An ebony or Daedric tower shield is a good candidate for these types of constant enchantment. That way, all you need to do is hide or run away for a few seconds if you are hit, and you'll get much of your health back. If you want to "cheat" a bit, instead of doing a constant 4 points of Restore Health, choose a range of 1-7 points, and then keep equipping and unequipping the enchanted item until you get the full 7. You may find these values get reset on resting and/or restoring a saved game, but if so, just repeat the trick of equipping and unequipping again.
