Voyage Hints
How do I get past the alien at the top of the stairs?
of 30: Ardan notes that the alien at the top of the stairs seems to be rather unfriendly. (If you can call spitting at you "unfriendly".)
of 30: You don't want to do anything aggressive -- especially since you want to present an attitude of friendliness yourself.
of 30: What can you do that would help pacify this Selenite?
of 30: Historically, food has always seemed to work, when confronting "hostile natives". But what can you feed him?
of 30: Do you notice anything identifying about this alien?
of 30: Note the two symbols on his shoulders.
of 30: If these do not yet look familiar, you should spend some time on the plateau below, exploring around the five areas of colorful plants.
of 30: The two objects are symbols of two of the plants on the plateau.
of 30: They also represent the "power" that is required to subdue the plants that the aliens eat.
of 30: In other words, even the aliens can be intimidated by the various plants, and need to be able to overcome some of them.
of 30: Have you explored the plateau area yet?
of 30: Did you encounter any of the aliens out on the plateau? Think about would they be out there,
of 30: They are eating from the fruit of some of the plants.
of 30: But they could only eat from plants over which they have power.
of 30: For example, there is an alien with representations of blue and yellow fruits on his shoulders, grazing among the red and purple plants.
of 30: And you should already know that the blue and yellow fruits have power over (or are able to subdue) the purple and red plants, respectively.
of 30: But the alien at the top of the stairs isn't shown among any plants. How can you tell which fruits he eats?
of 30: The first way is to know what fruits subdue, or have power over, what other fruits.
of 30: Have you checked all of the ledges up the side of the mountain (from where you initially jumped, to the bottom of these stairs?)
of 30: The second is to look at the placement of the plants on the plateau. (And the ledge at the bottom of these stairs gives an excellent viewpoint of the plateau.)
of 30: If you combine these pieces of information, you will see that there is a direct relationship between the "hierarchy" of plants, and their positioning on the plateau.
of 30: In each case, you can find which plant can subdue which other plant by finding the first color group (on the plateau), and going two colors counterclockwise. That will define which plant the first color "is greater than", or is able to subdue.
of 30: It also provides a mechanism for determining which plants each alien eats.
of 30: Starting with the two fruits indicated on an alien's shoulders, move two colors counterclockwise (on the plateau) to find the two fruits this alien prefers (because he can "subdue" them).
of 30: The alien at the top of the stairs has green and purple plants showing on his shoulders.
of 30: Using the "wheel of colors" on the plateau (or the diagrams on the various ledges leading up to the mountain top), green subdues blue and purple subdues yellow.
of 30: Thus, this alien would eat blue and yellow fruit.
of 30: He will not take either fruit directly.
of 30: Perhaps you can mix the two into a "compote" that would be edible by Ardan.
