Voyage Hints
How do I work with the various parts of the puzzle?
of 18: On the panel, there is a 2x2 grid, containing 4 Selenite numbers. The bottom 2 numbers are both set to the Selenite symbol for "zero" (or "empty").
of 18: Underneath are two buttons -- one that is just a round "dot", and another that is a longer "dash". Where have you seen these before?
of 18: The symbols represent numbers in the Selenite numbering system, and can be found in various locations around the lunar environment.
of 18: The "dot" and "dash" buttons refer to the dots and dashes that make up all Selenite numbers. But how would they work with this puzzle?
of 18: What happens if you press either of these two buttons?
of 18: Something changes in one of the two bottom boxes of the grid. What changes, and which box does it change in?
of 18: It appears that each of the two bottom boxes (the ones that start at "0") can be "selected" by clicking on them. That is, they can "get focus". Clicking on either one gives it the focus.
of 18: When either the "dot" or "dash" button is pressed, the numeric box that currently has the focus will change.
of 18: Clicking the "dot" or "dash" button will add either a "1" or a "5" to whichever box is currently selected. How many times can you do this?
of 18: Try adding 5 dots to one of the boxes.
of 18: The fifth time you click the "dot", the 4 previous dots turn into a single dash. This is in keeping with the Selenite numbering system, where the dash represents a "5".
of 18: However, there is a limit as to how large a number can be represented in either of the two bottom boxes. What is it?
of 18: If you try adding as many dots and/or dashes to one of the boxes as you can, you'll find that the largest number you can represent will contain 3 dashes (15) and 4 dots (4), for a total of 19. That is because the largest Selenite "digit" is 19.
of 18: Continue exploring the puzzle for other active buttons.
of 18: Note the "initialize" button (the one with the square Selenite symbol for "zero" or "empty") at the bottom left. What happens when you press that?
of 18: Anything you have put into either of the bottom two boxes (using the "dot" and "dash" buttons) will be erased, and both boxes will be reset to "zero". So this is a "Reset" button for the two bottom boxes.
of 18: The button at the bottom right shows the ideogram for "Go To", or "Enter". And in this case, it is a way of "entering" a value for the puzzle, and having it check it for accuracy.
of 18: When this button is pressed, the values that have been entered into the two bottom boxes are validated. If they are incorrect, a red light at the top of the panel lights, and the two bottom boxes are reset to 0. If they are correct, a green light at the top of the panel lights, and the puzzle is solved.
