How does the scale work?
of 12: While Ardan is standing in front of the scale, only one setting will have any effect.
of 12: That is when he has clicked the first red button to the left -- effectively a value of "1".
of 12: At that point, the door on the far side of the room opens.
of 12: If Ardan sets the scale to another setting (by clicking a different red button), the door closes.
of 12: Or, if the scale is set to "1" and the door opens, but Ardan moves away from the scale, the door closes again.
of 12: But when he moves back in front of the scale, the door opens again.
of 12: So it seems that the scale is actually a pressure-sensitive pad that opens the door...
of 12: ... only when the scale is set to "1", and Ardan is standing there.
of 12: What does that imply?
of 12: "Setting = 1, man = 1".
of 12: The pressure-sensitive scale only opens the door on the far side of the room when the number of people on the scale equals the number that the scale is set to.
of 12: Setting it to "2" would require two people to be standing on the scale for the door to open, and so on.
