Arx Fatalis Hints

Gameplay Advice

  • 1 of 9: As you progress through Arx, you will undertake many quests and be confronted with all sorts of challenges. While this hint file can help you out when you get stuck, by bearing in mind some of the tips listed below, you may find yourself needing to refer to these hints less often.
  • 2 of 9: Be sure to read the section on character creation to gain a good idea of what skills are available and which skills will best complement your style of play.
  • 3 of 9: The game provides you with a journal to record important events and quests. Your journal will be updated from time to time, and at these times it will glow blue for a moment. Often, the next step in your quest will already be recorded in your journal, saving you the confusion of trying to figure out just what you were supposed to do next. When you find yourself truly at a loss as to how to proceed, try consulting the Main Quests section.
  • 4 of 9: As time passes within the game, your character will become hungry. If he goes without food for too long, your character will suffer a loss of hit points. Make sure you stock up before any extended expedition into the caves of Arx.
  • 5 of 9: You'll come across many chests, containers, signs, and stranger things in Arx. Whenever you see the cursor change to a hand, do a double-click on the object to inspect it. All sorts of useful items are concealed in chests and barrels, and you'll be able to open more of these with a good Technical Skill. Remember to loot the corpses of your fallen enemies as well, as they often possess important keys and items. Additionally, be alert for secret doors and buttons. If you suspect one of these may be nearby, the Reveal spell can pinpoint it for you.
  • 6 of 9: Arx is full of locked doors, and most doors have a corresponding key which opens them. Keeping track of all these keys can be a headache, not to mention the amount of space they will take up in your inventory. Buy a keyring as soon as you are able. By placing keys on the ring, you can use the keyring on a locked door, and the game will automatically select the correct key.
  • 7 of 9: Be aware of the limited space provided by your inventory. While you can carry up to two extra backpacks, you will still find yourself shuffling items around to make room for new acquisitions. It's a good idea to keep a few inventory slots free for items acquired from NPCs during conversation. If you find yourself missing one such item, you'll need to return to where the conversation took place and search for the item on the ground.
  • 8 of 9: Several puzzles in the game require you to use an item. This can be a bit confusing, as there are two ways of using items. As a general rule, when using one item on another item or on an object in the gameworld, double-click the item and then click on the target. If the item is to be used on your character, such as when ingesting a potion or equipping a piece of armor, or when there is no identifiable target, press the "Use" key (default: "F") to use the item.
  • 9 of 9: Finally, talk to everyone you meet. Nearly all of the NPCs in Arx have something to say, and what comes out of one NPC's mouth may be just the clue you need to get back on track.
