Barrow Hill: Curse of the Ancient Circle Hints
How am I supposed to know what offerings to give each stone?
of 25: Brace yourself! This is the Big One, requiring you to correlate and organize information from several different sources.
of 25: The first info source you need to help you put things together is the scientific report inside the locked briefcase in Conrad Morse's motel room.
of 25: Use the summary report booklet inside that briefcase to match offerings up with trench numbers.
of 25: The descriptions of what was found in the pottery in each trench will help you figure out what offering goes to that trench's stone and how you can get it.
of 25: But before you can start gathering offerings, you'll need to find suitable containers to put each one into.
of 25: The hints below will explain what the booklet's descriptions for each trench mean, and will then give detailed instructions on getting each offering.
of 25: Now that you know how to get each offering and what trench it goes with, you need to figure out how the trench numbers correspond to the seven stones on the hill.
of 25: Some of the archeologists' other left-behind papers will help with that.
of 25: Check the assistant's journal that's on the bed in motel room #2.
of 25: The July 27th entry says that the first test pit (i.e., trench) was dug around the stone known as Melkah. There's even a drawing of it in the journal, plus a description of its position in the circle.
of 25: So now you could go out to the Barrow Hill site and easily find the Melkah stone and give it the oil offering, but how are you going to know what to give the other stones?
of 25: Read on in the same journal to find out.
of 25: I summarize the journal's dig information below.
of 25: That's pretty good info, but it's incomplete and a bit vague in parts. Thankfully, there's another source that can help complete the picture.
of 25: Go in through the service station's entrance and approach the Barrow Hill bulletin board in the back.
of 25: The large and colorful drawing that a Sorepoint Junior School class did shows the seven stones as you see them (approximately) when approaching the stone circle.
of 25: If you zoom in on the rightmost stone in the picture, you can see that it was labeled as Cailleach, which fits with what the journal said about that stone's position.
of 25: Now look at the smaller black-and-white drawing of the seven stones that's directly below the class' colorful drawing.
of 25: Click on the black-and-white drawing to flip it over and see what the stone names are in left-to-right order.
of 25: Matching that with what we already know, it's clear that this drawing is the ultimate stone-position-vs.-name correlation, since it lists the stones in left-to-right (clockwise) order as you enter the circle.
of 25: Using this info with the journal's correlation of trench number and stone name, you can figure out what offering to give each stone based on its position in the circle.
of 25: It's handiest to make a rough map of the Barrow Hill stone circle area and label each stone with its name, trench number, and offering as you figure it out.
of 25: Or you can just use the map I have below, which has all that information already on it.
of 25: Once you've got it all figured out, go to the circle and give each stone its offering by moving up next to the stone, turning to face it, and clicking on the correct offering in inventory. (TIP: Save your game before you start, since you'll have to go re-collect any offerings that are offered to the wrong stone.)
of 25: You can give the offerings in any order, but it's far easier to do it in a clockwise or counterclockwise loop. Using the annotated map above (or your own) as a reference, it should be quick and easy.
