Bioshock Hints
ADAM and EVE Tips
of 14: In Bioshock, the "magic" system consists of spells called plasmids and magic points called EVE. Each time you use a plasmid, it'll consume some of your EVE.
of 14: The only way to get more EVE when you run out is to inject yourself with an EVE hypo. They can be found on many corpses, in many containers, and lying around loose. Also, many of the Circus of Values vending machines will sell them.
of 14: As for plasmids, you'll find special plasmid power-up devices in a few areas that will give you new plasmids for free. You can also "buy" plasmids from Gatherer's Garden machines. (The same goes for the three categories of tonic, which are basically extra abilities you get when they're active -- kind of like constant-effect spells in other games.)
of 14: That's where ADAM comes in. It's a special "genetic currency" that you can only spend at Gatherer's Garden machines to buy new plasmids and tonics, new slots for your plasmids and tonics, and increases in max health and max EVE.
of 14: The only way to get ADAM is to get ahold of one of the freaky little girls called "little sisters." Most regions of the game have one or more little sisters wandering around in them.
of 14: The catch is that most little sisters are accompanied by a huge and powerful guardian called a big daddy. You have to kill a big daddy before you can get ADAM from his little sister.
of 14: After a big daddy goes down, the little sister will be helpless. Go up to her to get the option to harvest or rescue her. (The keys used for those actions will be shown on-screen.)
of 14: If you harvest a little sister, you'll kill her and receive 160 ADAM. If you rescue her, you'll only get 80 ADAM, but the innocent girl who was mutated into the little sister will be saved.
of 14: The first time you encounter a little sister, a woman named Tenenbaum will give you the means to rescue them and promise you a reward if you do.
of 14: There's no immediate reward, but after every third little sister you rescue, a special teddy bear will be placed next to the nearest Gatherer's Garden machine. Searching the bear will get you 200 ADAM, a plasmid or tonic (usually), and some ammo.
of 14: You still end up with a bit less ADAM than if you'd harvested all of the little sisters, but the plasmids and tonics can really come in handy. See the list below if you want to know what plasmid or tonic comes with each reward.
of 14: Of those reward items, the Hypnotize Big Daddy plasmid is the most useful. You may want to rescue three little sisters early in the game in order to get it, then harvest all of the rest.
of 14: Even if you want to be sure to get all of the plasmid and tonic rewards, you should still harvest three little sisters at some point, since the final reward item is merely first aid kits.
of 14: After you start saving up some ADAM, you'll have to carefully decide what to spend it on. Almost every region has a Gatherer's Garden machine, and each one will have a fairly large variety of things to sell.
