Dragon Age II Hints
Family Matter
of 10: You'll get this quest when you finish the companion mini-quest "An Update," which you'll get after finishing any main plot quest after "Finding Home" and "Profit and Loss".
of 10: Put Varric in your party and travel to Hightown on the Kirkwall Night map, then go to the west side of the Hightown Estates area to find the entrance to Bartrand's Estate.
of 10: When you enter, all of your characters except for Varric will mysteriously disappear, and he'll have to kill off a bunch of guards by himself.
of 10: After a cut-scene, the rest of your party will show up. Loot the crate in the starting room, then go to the next room to find another crate and a few crazed guards to fight.
of 10: Go west to a room with more crazed guards, including a powerful commander, then go north one room to find a similar battle (plus a trap). A couple of rooms past that, there's a combat series that includes a *whole* lot of guards.
of 10: After a conversation with Bartrand's steward, go down the stairs and loot the crate in the NW corner of the room, then go back up the stairs and check the north and south rooms for two chests, one of which contains an armor upgrade for Varric.
of 10: When you open the door to the central upstairs room, a bunch of guards will start pouring into the downstairs area and coming after you. You'll probably want to retreat into the room you just opened and make them come to you there.
of 10: Bartrand is a fairly powerful assassin, so watch for him to appear in the room next to your characters and sneak-attack them. You'll want to immediately attack him to keep him from killing your weaker characters.
of 10: After the battle is over, you can advise Varric on whether or not to kill Bartrand. Advising him to do it will get you a friendship increase, and telling him not to will get a rivalry increase.
of 10: Loot the chest in the bedroom, then go down the stairs and out the estate's front door to get a final bit of conversation with Varric.
