Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern Hints

How do I get out of this maze of caves?

  • 1 of 32: First you'll need to be able to see!
  • 2 of 32: You won't be able to get through the maze of caves without a map.
  • 3 of 32: The clue you need is back in the original cave where you just finished building the new fire.  There is a map in this room, although it may not look like it, initially.
  • 4 of 32: If you look around the floor, you should find a stone with a 3x3 grid that has a lot of arrows, and some symbols on it.
  • 5 of 32: This grid is the map to the cave maze -- or at least, a very important part of the map.
  • 6 of 32: Have you noticed anything else recently with the same 3x3 grid?
  • 7 of 32: What about Klem's stone?
  • 8 of 32: Have you noticed anything else around here with similar colors?
  • 9 of 32: What about the colored squares next to each of the cave openings?
  • 10 of 32: In order to create a path through the caves, you will need to relate all three together -- the diagram (of the 3x3 grid) on the ground, Klem's stone (with a grid of colors), and the cave openings (marked with colored squares).
  • 11 of 32: You will need to pass through a total of nine caves, from start to finish, which is the same number of colored squares on Klem's stone. And the same number of spaces on the 3x3 grid.
  • 12 of 32: Each of the colored squares on Klem's stone represents one cave you will need to pass through.
  • 13 of 32: Each of the caves is distinguished from the others by the color near the opening.
  • 14 of 32: To determine the correct order -- which color to pass through first, second, and so on -- you will need to study the 3x3 grid on the ground.
  • 15 of 32: The grid has nine spaces (one for each cave), and a pattern of several arrows, each one passing from one space to another.
  • 16 of 32: The arrows on the 3x3 grid indicate which cave to pass through first, then second, and so on, until reaching the final cave.
  • 17 of 32: You will need to figure out which space, on the grid, would indicate the location of the first cave -- and which would indicate the last cave.
  • 18 of 32: Notice the two squares on the grid that are marked a bit differently than the others.
  • 19 of 32: The first cave is indicated by the arrow that starts outside the 3x3 grid and ends inside the top right space.
  • 20 of 32: The last cave is indicated by the starburst shape in the bottom left space.
  • 21 of 32: If we were to superimpose the colors from Klem's stone onto the 3x3 grid, we would have a usable map.
  • 22 of 32: If Klem's colors were on the 3x3 grid, the arrows on the grid would then indicate a series of colors to pass through, one at a time.  Since these colors match the colors marked outside the cave openings, you would then have a workable plan of which caves to pass through, in what order.
  • 23 of 32: The only problem is, you don't know which direction the 3x3 grid was intended to be read from.  You'll have to imagine that the 3x3 grid on the ground could be read from any of the four sides.
  • 24 of 32: If you were to superimpose the colors from Klem's stone onto the 3x3 grid, in the same orientation that you see them, the map would be incorrect.
  • 25 of 32: The correct orientation is to imagine that you are seeing the 3x3 grid from the opposite side -- or that the grid is rotated 180 degrees.
  • 26 of 32: By using the colors on Klem's stone, we can translate the path through the stone grid to a series of colors.  These colors would then guide us through the correct caves.
  • 27 of 32: But before you try to venture further into the cave maze, there's something else you're going to need.  If you've attempted to explore the cave maze at all, you know that you're going to need some light.
  • 28 of 32: A torch would be very helpful.
  • 29 of 32: There are three torches that can be found on the floor of the cave.
  • 30 of 32: The first torch can be lit from the fire in the first cave.
  • 31 of 32: The second (and third) torch can be lit from an already-burning torch.  To do this, you will need to select a new torch from inventory and click on the currently burning torch to light a fresh one.
  • 32 of 32: It is possible to move 8 times per torch without the torch burning out.  If you forget to light a new one before taking the 9th step, the torch will burn out and Arok will need to start the cave sequence over.  Note: It is not the amount of time spent in the caves, but the number of steps walked through the caves that causes the torch to burn down.  In other words, if you leave the computer to make a sandwich, when you get back the torch will still be burning as it was when you left -- but if Arok walks back and forth a few times, the torch will burn down with each step.
