Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern Hints

How do I prepare the flint for Toar?

  • 1 of 19: You won't be able to prepare the flint until you have found food, cooked it, and made tea
  • 2 of 19: After you have completed the above tasks, talk to Toar again about choosing a flint and he will set everything up for you.
  • 3 of 19: Note that there are four flint shapes in the top right corner of the screen.  These four shapes indicate that you can make four mistakes when preparing a flint.  If you make more than four, you will need to start this puzzle over.
  • 4 of 19: Selecting the flint is the first step.  There are three to choose from (one of the three stones along the bottom of the combining rock).
  • 5 of 19: You will need to select the one that will be the most likely be able to be shaped without cracking or shattering.
  • 6 of 19: The one on the left is cracked -- it won't hold up to being shaped without getting broken.
  • 7 of 19: The one on the right isn't much better.  It has white spots on it, indicating that there may be impurities in the flint.  This one might hold up to some shaping, but will eventually break.
  • 8 of 19: The flint in the center is the correct one to shape.  Next, you will need to select the appropriate tool to use.  There are three to choose from (one of the three tools along the top of the combining rock).
  • 9 of 19: If you hold the cursor over each of the tools you will see a written description of each tool.  The description is detailed enough to indicate the correct tool to use.  Note: You won't see the written descriptions for each tool until you have clicked on the puzzle once to activate it.
  • 10 of 19: The center tool (the awl) is only intended to pierce wood or bone.  It would not be useful for shaping flint.
  • 11 of 19: The reindeer antler hammer (on the left) is used to refine the edges of a block of flint and to begin chopping blades.  Hmm... sounds like it could be useful.  Let's see what the tool on the right could be used for.
  • 12 of 19: The stone hammer (on the right) is used to chip the first flakes and to prepare a striking surface.
  • 13 of 19: Seems like the stone hammer should be the most useful tool to start with.
  • 14 of 19: The stone hammer will need to be used more than once on the flint.  It is difficult to tell how many times, exactly, to use the stone hammer, without counting your moves and watching the four shapes in the top right corner of the screen to see the point when you've made a mistake.
  • 15 of 19: You should use the stone hammer three times.  If you try to use it any more than that, the shapes in the top right corner start to disappear.
  • 16 of 19: Now, it is time to switch to the reindeer antler hammer.  This will further shape the flint.
  • 17 of 19: Again, it is difficult to predict how many times you will need to use this hammer, without watching the shapes in the top right corner of the screen disappear when you've made an error.
  • 18 of 19: The actual number of times to use the reindeer antler hammer is twice.
  • 19 of 19: Once you've completed these tasks, the only thing remaining is to pick up the core (prepared flint) and give it to Toar.
