Fallout: New Vegas Hints

What's the maximum damage threshold (DT) that's achievable?

  • 1 of 11: In Oblivion and Fallout 3, a limit of 85 was set for AC and DR (their versions of DT), and it would've been possible to achieve higher values without those limits. In Fallout NV, there isn't any upper limit on DT, but the best you can achieve with what's available is a DT of 46.
  • 2 of 11: To eventually get a DT of 46, you must start by not taking the Kamikaze perk while creating your character, since it'll subtract 2 from your DT.
  • 3 of 11: Plan on taking the level 6 perk Toughess twice, since that'll give you a total of +6 DT.
  • 4 of 11: When you're deciding on which Implant Perks to buy, be sure to make Sub-Dermal Armor one of them, since it'll add 4 to DT.
  • 5 of 11: That'll bring your base DT up to 10. The other 36 points are going to come from the special Remnants-brand power armor and helmet.
  • 6 of 11: You can get one of each by finishing Arcade Gannon's "For Auld Lang Syne" follower quest. If you can't do that quest for some reason, or if you want to get Remnants armor earlier in the game, there is one other copy of both the armor and the helmet that you can find.
  • 7 of 11: For some additional DT boosts that only apply in special situations, you could get the level 8 perk Stonewall for an effective +5 to DT vs. melee and unarmed attacks, the level 10 perk Nerd Rage to get +15 DT when your health is below 20% of max, and the level 12 perk Hit the Deck to increase your DT vs. explosives by 50% (or 25 points with a recent game update).
  • 8 of 11: As for ingestibles, Nuka-Cola Quartz will give you anywhere from +2 to +6 DT (depending on your Survival skill), and whiskey will do the same thing if the follower named Cass is with you.
  • 9 of 11: Even though DT is Fallout NV's main "armor class" thing, the old damage resistance (DR) concept from Fallout 3 is still around. Almost no wearable items will add to DR, but there are two chems that will: med-x and slasher. (See the Campfire Items list for how to make slasher.)
  • 10 of 11: Each one of them will add 25 to your DR, and both together will add 50. The protection value of DR is completely independent of DT, so there's no overlap or conflict involved. In fact, having a DR of 50 in addition to a DT of 46 will make you darned near invincible. Just be sure to keep plenty of fixer in stock for when you get addicted to either of the chems.
  • 11 of 11: As a final note, remember that any attack that hits you in V.A.T.S. mode will have 25% taken off of its damage just because you're in V.A.T.S. mode.
