Fallout: New Vegas Hints
What if I have to do the combat?
of 8: Then I hope you brought all the right stuff for it, which includes a stealth boy, lots of mines, and a sniper rifle or other powerful ranged weapon.
of 8: Go partway up the path so you can see the Legate waiting for you up ahead, but he doesn't approach you yet. Set a bunch of mines in a cluster there, then do so in another spot farther down. You should also do a third mine cluster even farther down just to be sure. Taking the Legate down right away is *very* important since he'll heal himself with special healing powder when his health gets low if you let him.
of 8: Go back through the large open gateway and look left and right (north and south) to see a couple of high-up guard towers. Several Legion soldiers may spawn near each tower and run to join the fight. It would help to set some mine clusters along the paths they'd have to take to get from the guard tower to the large open gateway. If you have any mines left over after that, set them in the gateway.
of 8: When you're ready, go to the lowest spot on the path from which you can see the Legate and get out your best distance-shooting weapon. Crouch down and use a stealth boy if necessary to get your stealth indicator to read "[HIDDEN]," then quicksave.
of 8: Take your best aim at the Legate's head (or use V.A.T.S. if you want) and deliver him a powerful sneaky head shot, quickrestoring and trying again if you miss. If your shot staggers him, you might want to quickly fire off another shot or two. Stand up and run down the path to where you're outside your last mine cluster's blast radius, then get out your best up-close damage weapon.
of 8: Wait for the Legate to make it to you (if he does), then V.A.T.S.-blast him in the head at point blank range. Hopefully, it won't be hard to take him down after the sneaky head shot and mine clusters injure him. If things don't work out, quickrestore and try again until you manage to kill the Legate quickly.
of 8: NOTES: If either of his two bodyguards survive, they may turn non-hostile when he dies, but don't trust it -- they'll probably turn hostile again in a minute or two. Also, if your securitron pal is injured but not killed by your mines, it'll start attacking you.
of 8: If your character is very high-level, you may get swarmed by Legion soldiers soon after you sneak-shoot the Legate. If so, you'll need to be sure to use a stealth boy before starting the combat, then use only silenced weapons during the combat so you won't be detected. Also, you may want to retreat to a spot near the Legate's tent or back in the area with the soldier tents so you don't get surrounded, since that would increase your chances of being detected. Hopefully, you have more stealth boys and several useful chems like med-x, psycho, and slasher.
