Fallout: New Vegas Hints

The Assault on Quarry Junction

  • 1 of 17: There are several reasons to want the Quarry Junction (location 4 on the Zone 3 Map) cleared of deathclaws. There's a fat man weapon and two mini nukes to pick up, there's a pile of deathclaw eggs to get for the "Bleed Me Dry" misc. quest, and there's the nearby Great Khan Encampment (location 3) that you'll want to discover so you can easily access it in the future for a couple of quests.
  • 2 of 17: You'll need to bring either a sniper rifle or a gauss rifle, plus plenty of ammo for it. See the "Technology Smorgasbord" undocumented quest for a fairly easy way to get some gauss rifles. If you don't have the Wild Wasteland trait, you could also get the unique gauss rifle called YCS/186. (If you bring a sniper rifle instead, load it with armor-piercing rounds.)
  • 3 of 17: Go NE from Sloan (location 6 on the Zone 3 Map) and approach the quarry junction area slowly and with your scoped weapon out. Use the scope to help you see the young deathclaw that's near the big earth-moving machinery and snipe it for a sneak-attack critical.
  • 4 of 17: Go up to the earth-moving machinery, then turn west and move forward cautiously. Go to where you can see another piece of earth-moving machinery up on a small hill on your right. There are three deathclaws near it, though none of them may be visible at first.
  • 5 of 17: Go over to the "corner" of the rocks on the left and hop your way up onto the lower rocks. Get out your scoped weapon and move along the rocks until you can snipe one of the deathclaws on the hill in the head. Hopefully, that'll score you a one-shot kill, or at least do a whole lot of damage.
  • 6 of 17: One or more deathclaws may run down the hill and come after you, but they won't be able to get up onto the rocks you're on. Instead, they'll run around on or near the hill, or they may run into the main quarry area and out of sight. If so, stay on the rocks and wait for them to reappear.
  • 7 of 17: If your stealth indicator goes to "[CAUTION]" or "[HIDDEN]" while you're waiting, sneak down the rocks and over to where you can snipe the deathclaws, making sure you're in a position to run back up the rocks when they come after you. There's another deathclaw in the quarry area that you can snipe from on or near the rocks, so be sure to get it, too.
  • 8 of 17: After all four of them are dead, quicksave, then return to the ground and run west and then south while staying next to the rock wall. Your goal is to make it to the base of the southern of the three huge ramps that lead up to the large rock-crushing structure. If a deathclaw sees you, and you can't make it to the ramp before it gets to you, quickrestore and wait a bit before trying again. Hopefully, it'll wander off and not see you a second time.
  • 9 of 17: An alternative is to try to spot it and snipe it while close enough to the rocks you were on before to make it back there. Another alternative is to run for the northern huge ramp and try to shoot deathclaws from on it. However, it may be hard to find targets from there. Yet another alternative is to go back the way you came until you can fast-travel, then do so and come back to get the deathclaws to forget about you.
  • 10 of 17: If you get to the southern ramp unseen, go a short way up the ramp, then jump onto the railing so you can get onto the ore conveyor that's next to the ramp. Crouch-walk your way along it until you're able to use your scoped weapon to see some deathclaws on the ground to the NW. There are two regular deathclaws and a deathclaw alpha male that you'll want to snipe down from your vantage point. (Note that one of the regular deathclaws may be wandering around near a pool of dirty water that's a ways to the SW.)
  • 11 of 17: After they're all dead, go back down to the bottom of the ramp and head SW to the dirty water pool. Grab the fat man that's next the pool and the mini nuke that's underwater, then go over to the ramp that's a short distance to the west.
  • 12 of 17: Go a short way up the ramp and use your scoped weapon to see the mother deathclaw and her four baby deathclaws behind an earth-moving machine to the NW. Get to where you can shoot them, and be ready to run a ways up the ramp if the mother deathclaw comes after you. She can run up next to the ramp and slash you if you're not far enough up.
  • 13 of 17: Go to the top of the ramp and jump over the railing, then go NW down the path until you come to a spot where you can go left to get up onto a higher path. Do so, then get onto the nearest large rock and crouch down. Use your scoped weapon to help you see and shoot the deathclaw that's a ways NE of you. (Note that it can come after you and make it to your position, so be sure to kill it before it does.)
  • 14 of 17: From the same position, you should be able to see the final deathclaw a ways to the right of the previous one, between an earth-moving machine and a large red crane. Shoot it down to finally clear the quarry area of hostiles.
  • 15 of 17: To get to the Great Khan Encampment, go to the north end of the path and turn left, then go past the crane's claw and up the sloping ground that leads south.
  • 16 of 17: The deathclaw egg pile that you need for a quest is down near where the deathclaw mother and babies were. If you have the quest, you can follow the quest marker to find the eggs. Check near the egg pile for a mini nuke, three loose deathclaw eggs, a light machine gun, some 5.56mm ammo, and a super stimpak.
  • 17 of 17: NOTE: If you go through the opening in the rocks a bit north of the Great Khan camp, you'll find a few more deathclaws. There's no safe way to kill them, so it's best to just avoid them. Ditto with the deathclaws that are a ways east of the quarry's entrance.
