Silenced Gun Tips
of 6: The silenced .22 pistols that are cheap and widely available will work on many unarmored targets, even for low-level characters early in the game, as long as you remember to shoot them in the head while hidden. Even without stealth boys or a high Sneak skill, you can really wreak havoc on a town or other settlement without any repercussions -- except that you might accidentally fail a quest by killing someone who's essential to it. To avoid that, only shoot generic townspeople who don't have unique names.
of 6: The best silent pistol to use on armored targets is a 12.7mm pistol with a silencer mod attached. It'll be much more powerful than silenced 10mm or .22 pistols, and it'll still qualify for the sneak attack bonus given by the Level 6 Perk The Professional.
of 6: The arms merchant at the 188 Trading Post (location 36 on the Zone 2 Map) and the vendortron at Gun Runners (location 43 on the Zone 1 Map) are going to be your main sources for 12.7mm pistol gear. They'll almost always have 12.7mm ammo in stock, and they can randomly have 12.7mm pistol silencers. (And the vendortron can have 12.7mm pistols if you're level 11+.)
of 6: Despite not qualifying for the Professional perk's sneak-attack bonus, the best silence-able gun of all is the sniper rifle. Even though its suppressor mod isn't technically called a silencer, it works just as well. Sniper rifles don't do much more damage per shot than 12.7mm pistols, but they have both hollow point and armor-piercing ammo available, and their hand load ammo increases damage by 50% without increasing a target's effective damage threshold. Also, their built-in scopes are great for long-range sniping.
of 6: Your only sources for the suppressor mod are the 188 Trading Post's arms merchant (if you're level 12+) and the Gun Runners vendortron (any level). They can also have sniper rifles and all types of .308 ammo (except hand load) in stock.
of 6: Whatever silent weapon you use for sneaky assassinations, always remember to keep it repaired. Also, keep increasing your skill with that type of weapon until it's very high. Doing those two things will help you get the most out of your silent weapons, as will getting the Level 16 Perk Better Criticals.
