Gothic 3 Hints

Skill Tips

  • 1 of 15: There are several skills that are important to get as soon as you possibly can.
  • 2 of 15: One of them is Pick Difficult Locks. It's necessary to have in order to open a whole lot of locked items in the game, especially treasure chests.
  • 3 of 15: Another essential one is Acrobatics, which helps you take less damage from long falls.
  • 4 of 15: Endurance of the Wolf lets you sprint longer, and Poison Resistance makes you immune to the poison that some creatures (like bloodflies) have.
  • 5 of 15: Prospector and Hone Blade are two good smithing skills to get early so that you can sharpen weapons and get more from ore veins when you mine them.
  • 6 of 15: Game Hunter is a useful hunting skill since it lets you do more damage to wild animals. The three hunting skills that have to do with taking trophies from animals are useful, too.
  • 7 of 15: Once you have all those, you should concentrate on getting all of the hunting skills and buying a Nimrod or Silent Death bow. (See the Money-Making Tips if you need to save up for all that.) Being a mighty hunter will really come in handy, especially when dealing with wild creatures.
  • 8 of 15: Get the Potions with Permanent Effects alchemy skill soon after, since you'll then be able to mix up potions that permanently increase your life energy, endurance, and mana. This makes it unnecessary to ever spend any learning points on those three attributes. (Or, at least, you'll need to spend a lot *fewer* learning points on them.)
  • 9 of 15: After that, it's pretty much up to you what to get. I always like to buy a bunch of Strength points and get some of the fighting skills like Strong Swordfighter and Shield Parry. Also, see the Magic Tips for some advice on developing magic skills.
  • 10 of 15: NOTE: You could go on the "Ancient Knowledge pilgrimage" that I describe in the magic tips early in the game instead of spending any time or learning points on hunting skills. A powerful mage doesn't need a bow -- he can use fireballs or lightning bolts or whatever instead. Do this if you've got something else in mind for most of your learning points, like buying bunches of mana points.
  • 11 of 15: There are a few skills which I discuss below that aren't ever really worth much.
  • 12 of 15: One is the Pick Impossible Locks skill. You'd think that would be useful, but there are very few chests with impossible locks on them, and you'll undoubtedly find enough Open Locks scrolls to open them with. (Besides, they never have anything really special in them.)
  • 13 of 15: The three pickpocketing skills aren't really useful, either. As far as I can tell, you only get a small amount of gold or a cheap item each time you pickpocket someone.
  • 14 of 15: Another is Make Excuses. Even with this skill, making excuses when a guard confronts you about a crime rarely works. Besides, you can make him forget about it by provoking him and then either beating him up or running away so that he gives up on you.
  • 15 of 15: Yet another unuseful skill is Bargain. It requires a pretty high Thieving skill, and you can always make tons of money quickly by using the Money-Making Tips.
