Gothic 3 Hints
Liberation Tips
of 13: Whether you plan to help the rebels or the orcs primarily, you should wait to do any big city-liberating or hideout-destroying missions until after you've visited all the cities and hideouts and done every other mission in them that you can. (The same goes for the Nomad liberation missions in Varant.)
of 13: This is because once you liberate enough cities or destroy enough rebel hideouts, the side you're hurting will start to be automatically hostile to you, even in areas you've never visited before, and that'll shut you out of a *lot* of missions. (You could liberate a few early, but not too many.)
of 13: When you're ready to liberate a city, be sure you have the local liberation mission in your list, since that'll mean the slaves in the city will help you fight. All you have to do to start the liberation and get everyone going is attack (or be attacked by) any orc or mercenary anywhere inside the city.
of 13: In order to avoid being swarmed instantly, you might want to start the attack at one of the city's gates and move in from there.
of 13: Not everyone in a city will necessarily start fighting the moment you attack one of them. You may have to go around and attack several of them in different spots.
of 13: Also, you may need to do the "killing blow" move (see page 26 of the manual) to the first one or two that you knock out before they'll start dying automatically when defeated. To avoid having to do that, defeat the first ones with arrows or spells -- that's always an automatic kill.
of 13: It can really be overwhelming to try to kill enough orcs and mercenaries to get the remainder to flee, thereby achieving victory and completing the liberation mission.
of 13: One thing you can do is quickly leave the city through a gate and try to get them to follow you out a few at a time, making for a series of manageable fights instead of one gigantic, impossible one.
of 13: Better yet, you can kill many of them off one by one before you start on or even get the city liberation mission.
of 13: Another thing you can do if you have the spells is summon up a demon or golem to attack a city's residents. They won't turn hostile to you unless you attack them. However, your creature will attack anyone, including your liberation allies, and you may later be accused of murder by a guard if anyone gets killed (and you haven't finished liberating the city). See the Magic Tips for more about summoned allies.
of 13: Once the remaining orcs and mercs flee, you can let them go, and they'll drop their weapons and shields and disappear when they reach a certain distance from you.
of 13: You could chase one group of them until they reach a point where they start running back and forth. You can then attack them without fear of them attacking you. (This is a good thing to do if you want to be sure to kill some particular person who has something on him that you want.)
of 13: Then you need to go all through the city, taking everything you want, before you go do anything else. This is because when you leave the city and return, a bunch of possessive rebels will move in, and they'll attack you if they see you taking things. Also, all the dead orcs and mercenaries will have disappeared.
