Half-Life 2 Hints

Section 5: Canals and Parasite Rockets (d1_canals_05)

  • 1 of 19: The first thing you'll come to is a fence with a sewer overflow canal past it that you need to get into.
  • 2 of 19: Soon after you drop into the sewer canal, so will a couple of cops and manhacks.
  • 3 of 19: When they're finished off, you need to find a way to get out of the whole canal area and move on.
  • 4 of 19: Just past the canal area is a radioactive waste area. You'll have to step carefully in order to avoid the many pools of radioactive sludge.
  • 5 of 19: When you reach the resistance post, check out the cool unlimited ammo crate on the right. You can keep opening the crate to get more and more SMG ammo! (Up to the max you can carry, that is.)
  • 6 of 19: Leave the post, making your way carefully across some radioactive sludge and through some wreckage, until you reach the spot where parasite rockets start dropping.
  • 7 of 19: After you deal with the first parasite rocket (by running up and crowbar-whacking the headcrabs, ideally), check nearby for supplies and then move on through a few headcrab-infested areas.
  • 8 of 19: You'll soon come to a radioactive sludge bridge just past a gap in some fencing. Watch out, since the two headcrab-controlled corpses (called zombies) who are sitting around past the bridge will get up and come after you.
  • 9 of 19: Cross the sludge near those zombies and go through the fence hole in the back (watch out for headcrabs!) to get to the next painful obstacle.
  • 10 of 19: Just past that, a zombie will crash through a piece of fencing on the left.
  • 11 of 19: After the zombie's down, turn and make your way through the large electrified container, being careful not to touch the metal at all.
  • 12 of 19: TIP: A parasite rocket crashes at the other end of the container as you enter it, so you might want to run straight through and crowbar the headcrabs, then return to the container and carefully raid its supply crates.
  • 13 of 19: Watch out for a zombie rising up from the radioactive sludge past the electrified container as you cross on the long bent rail. If you're not careful, it might knock you off into the sludge.
  • 14 of 19: You don't have to fight that zombie or the headcrabs in the parasite rocket that crashes soon afterwards -- just run for the fencing gap over on the left and get onto the wooden planks past it. (You could then shoot the explosive barrel that's on their side of the fence to blow them up, but it's not necessary.)
  • 15 of 19: Follow the wooden planks along until you get to a garage of sorts where your first vehicle transport awaits you.
  • 16 of 19: After the mechanic raises the gate blocking your exit, sail forward a ways to get to a large open area full of debris and radioactive slime.
  • 17 of 19: You can zoom around the area, practicing your boat-handling skills and having fun, but watch out for the parasite rockets -- several of them have headcrabs near them that will attack if you get out and explore on foot. (There's a box of pistol ammo hiding behind some concrete debris near one rocket, but it's hard to find and not really worth the trouble.)
  • 18 of 19: When you're ready, find the gate in the back of the area and get it open so you can finally finish this long ol' chapter.
  • 19 of 19: Once the gate's open, return to the airboat and take it down the passageway and into Chapter 4: Water Hazard.
