The Elder Scrolls IV: Knights of the Nine Hints

Integration Strategies

  • 1 of 14: Since all of this added content is fully integrated into the main Oblivion game, and can be installed and used at any point of an Oblivion playthru, I've made a list of how some of the most useful new things can be used to enhance such a playthru. Some of these are of particular use if you're starting a new game and using the early development strategy that I have in the main Oblivion hint file's general tips.
  • 2 of 14: It's much quicker and easier to get access to enchanting and spellmaking altars if you install the Wizard's Tower module and buy the appropriate items for the altars that come with Frostcrag Spire.
  • 3 of 14: This is especially useful if you're playing on the hardest difficulty, since you'll then be able to make the useful spells and items I list in the main hint file very early on without having to go through the tough combats that are required for some of the Mages Guild recommendation quests.
  • 4 of 14: Note that to raise money to buy the expensive items that you need for the altars, you can use the already existing tip of joining the Thieves Guild and selling lots of stolen goods to Ongar in Bruma.
  • 5 of 14: Or instead, you can install and start on the Thieves Den module early, since it can have a better fence for stolen goods than the Thieves Guild does. The den is close to Anvil, so you'd do most of your looting there, especially in the castle barracks. Pickpocket those sleeping guards!
  • 6 of 14: Another great thing about the Thieves Den module is that you can buy lots of lockpicks from the service guys there, and you can practice your Security skill on an eternally re-locking "Training Chest." Also, the Security-fortifying potions you can buy from Tahm Blackwell can be used to help you pick open tough locks early in the game, such as the one on the display case in the tower lobby at the Arcane University.
  • 7 of 14: The best merchant to sell non-stolen things to, especially valuable things, is now Rowley Eardwulf at the Wawnet Inn. Install the Vile Lair module to get him.
  • 8 of 14: If one of your goals is to get a Reflect Damage of 100% or more, wait until you're level 25 or higher, then install the above-mentioned Vile Lair module and progress on it until you're able to get the Raiment of the Crimson Scar.
  • 9 of 14: You can also get the best version of the Escutcheon of Chorrol at that level, and those two items together will give you a 70% Reflect Damage effect. That way you'd only need to get one of the super-rare, random-loot-only Reflect Damage jewelry items instead two. (Those of you who've tried for the random items will realize what a big help this is. The only problem is that the raiment takes up several armor slots, which you may not like.)
  • 10 of 14: The Mehrunes Razor dagger that's the objective of the Mehrunes' Razor module can be very useful, especially to low-level characters who are playing on the highest difficulty setting. Its random chance of instantly killing an opponent is particularly useful against powerful self-healers who can otherwise be nearly impossible to ever kill.
  • 11 of 14: If you like taking eager followers along who'll fight for you, then install the Knights of the Nine module and finish its quest series. You'll then be able to have a knight follow you in addition to a mage apprentice (if you're the Mages Guild Arch-Mage) and a Dark Brotherhood guy (if you're the Dark Brotherhood's Listener). If you also use the Brother Martin tip in the main Oblivion hint file's combat tips and the following atronach familiar tip, you can build up quite the adventuring party!
  • 12 of 14: Install the Wizard's Tower module and then get the appropriate salt ingredients to make yourself an atronach familiar. They're like permanent summoned monsters who never time out and vanish!
  • 13 of 14: Another thing you should do after finishing the Knights of the Nine quests is use the tomb in the Priory of the Nine's undercroft that gives you a +5 to Strength that doesn't ever wear off. There are blessings for most other attributes, but I found the extra Strength to be the most useful due to the increased loot-carrying capacity that goes along with it.
  • 14 of 14: And of course, if you must have a horse, give her armor so no one can harm 'er!
