How do I solve the center stalk?

  • 1 of 21: The stalk to the left is the easiest to solve, then the one on the right.  If you haven't already done so, you may wish to solve the other stalks first and return to this one last.
  • 2 of 21: The center stalk will grow to a maximum of thirteen bumps tall.  Your ultimate goal, then, is to grow a stalk with leaves on the thirteenth bump.
  • 3 of 21: After experimenting with the three large colored buttons, you should notice a pattern in the amount of growth produced.  The stalk will very often grow to a specific height, after which the puzzle will be unsolvable.
  • 4 of 21: It is easy to make the stalk grow up to the ninth bump.  If it reaches this point, then it isn't possible to successfully complete this stalk with leaves at the top.  You'll need to look for a combination of buttons to press, which will result in a growth that doesn't end on the ninth bump.
  • 5 of 21: One thing that makes this stalk difficult is that it has an additional hurdle to work around.
  • 6 of 21: If the first bit of growth of this stalk ends on the fifth bump (the first hurdle), then the next growth will always end on the ninth bump (second hurdle).  So, for this stalk, five bumps of growth is the first hurdle you'll want to get past; and nine bumps of growth is the second hurdle.
  • 7 of 21: There is only one color that can grow a stalk that isn't five bumps high.
  • 8 of 21: The green button will grow the stalk somewhere between two and four bumps high.
  • 9 of 21: Your next goal is to get past the five-bump hurdle (without growing the stalk tall enough to get stuck on the nine-bump hurdle). 
  • 10 of 21: Subtract the current growth from five (the level of the first hurdle).  The stalk must grow taller than the result.
  • 11 of 21: You'll also need to know the maximum level of growth acceptable.  Subtract the height of the current stalk from nine.  The growth must be less than this number.
  • 12 of 21: Carefully choose the colored button which will allow the stalk to stop growing somewhere between the fifth and ninth bumps.
  • 13 of 21: What do I do next, if the stalk is two bumps tall?
  • 14 of 21: The next growth needs to end somewhere past the second hurdle (nine bumps), without yet reaching  the maximum height of the stalk (thirteen bumps).
  • 15 of 21: To figure out the maximum amount of growth possible, subtract the current height (six, seven, or eight) from the maximum of thirteen.  The stalk must grow less than this number, so that it will stop before reaching the maximum height of thirteen.
  • 16 of 21: You'll also need to make sure that the growth of the stalk will safely pass over the nine-bump hurdle.  Subtract the current height from nine bumps -- the next growth must grow the stalk more than this amount.
  • 17 of 21: You should now have two numbers indicating a minimum and a maximum amount of growth needed.  Choose the colored button that will result in the needed growth.How much growth do the three colors produce?
  • 18 of 21: What do I do next, if the stalk is now six bumps tall?
  • 19 of 21: To finish the stalk, you'll need to figure out which color to choose to grow leaves at the very top of the stalk.
  • 20 of 21: You'll need to subtract the current height of the stalk from the maximum of thirteen.  The result will be either one, two, or three.  With any of these answers, it will be possible to complete the growth with leaves at the top.
  • 21 of 21: Remember that each color consistently grows leaves on a specific bump.  Choose the colored button that will produce leaves at the very top.  For example, if the stalk were twelve bumps high, then it would only take one bump to grow it to the top.  In this example, you would use the green button in order to grow a leaf at the top.
