Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer Hints
Dagger Wound Island
of 15: First of all, create a new Knight or Troll character using all my great Character Creation Tips.
of 15: Once you start the game, check your inventory and equip all that is equipable, then save your game. Go to the Clan Leader's Hall and get both Dadeross' and Onefang's quests put on you, and then go get Talimere to join you. He's a level 5 character and has several more skills than you do so far (including some unspent skill points you might want to allocate now).
of 15: Also, go to the Adventurers' Inn and recruit Devlin Arcanus the Necromancer. As for Elsbeth Lamentia the Vampire, you can hire her if you want a Vampire in your permanent party (or if you just want another pirate-basher for now), or you can loot her for usable/sellable equipment and leave her in the inn.
of 15: Next, go around town and drink from all the stat barrels and wells. Also, raid the caravan's wagons for items. Use the empty Potion Bottles to create potions with the reagents you can find lying around the islands and go sell the two Tobersk Brandy items at Long-Tail's hut. (Don't buy any Tobersk Fruit from him yet.)
of 15: Go around and get all the local quests put on you so you can be fulfilling them as you explore the rest of the place. Also, check out all the expert skill trainers and see if they can benefit any of your companions (they all start with some unallocated skill points which you can put to good use).
of 15: Have everyone drink from the Luck well, then take advantage of the +1000 gold well. If you have too much gold to do so, go donate 5 times at the temple (this'll get your rep up a bit and help with shop prices) and buy everyone the Bow skill and a bow to go with it. (Remember to save in front of the weapon shop before entering the first time; it doesn't always have three or four bows.)
of 15: If you have more gold to "deal with," check out the other shops. One of 'em's bound to have something you want! (Like the Learning skill at Cures and Curses; that really helps with experience points.)
of 15: Once you do all that, you might want to venture out carefully into the pirate-infested area. If you take it slow and easy, you won't have to fight much at first because of all the lizard warriors out there. Be sure not to accidentally slash or shoot one of them, since you're not capable of trashing both them and the pirates yet. (Maybe later.)
of 15: It's also fairly easy to duck combat and explore around the island, picking up herbs and meteor pieces, raiding treasure chests and campfires, visiting remote hut communities, activating those teleporters, etc. If you do decide to do some serious combat before exploring the other islands, remember to have your Cleric (Talimere) heal you, retreat to town to drink of the wondrous town fountain periodically, and so on.
of 15: Another thing to do ASAP is to get a potion of Pure Speed from Thistle, whose hut is a ways SW of Blood Drop. Go around collecting reagents until you have all he wants, then get the potion and give it to your created hero.
of 15: As you explore the various islands and raid the various treasure chests, it becomes easy to fulfill the quests for Rohtnax and Aislen. Do that and collect some pirate "booty," then go buy useful skills and spells that you don't have yet, and have some guys trained up to expert (especially Talimere in Body Magic and Arcanus in Air Magic).
of 15: After Talimere's a Body Magic expert, and you've done everything else you can (including training your hero to level 5), it's time to enter the Abandoned Temple and loot the place.
of 15: Your first time through, you probably won't want to mess with getting the Prophecies of the Sun or all four of the treasure chests in the illusion-floor room, but you'll definitely want to get them all sometime before sailing for Ravenshore. If that's your goal immediately upon exiting the temple, then you'd better thrash it thoroughly. Also, I don't advise going to Ravenshore until you trash every single pirate regen point until it just can't regen anymore (and maybe the lizards, too, for a small bit of extra gold and experience).
of 15: When you think you're all done with Dagger Wound Island for now, then go get all the Tobersk Fruit and Tobersk Pulp from the wagons in the village, and go fill the rest of your inventories by buying fruit from Long-Tail. Then go to the ship and sail away.
of 15: TIP: Save your game right before you sail to Ravenshore, then when you arrive, quickly go check out the special "Tree" that has a randomly chosen artifact item in it (see the Secret Capitalized Plants list to learn how to find this special tree). If the artifact isn't something you can use right away, you might want to restore your game and try again.
