Myst III: Exile Hints
Where should I put the pegs?
of 13: First, make sure you know what the pegs do.
of 13: Notice that there are tracks above four of the six circles on each side.
of 13: If the ball is underneath one of these tracks when you reach a red peg, the ball will travel on the track and land on the corresponding circle on the opposite side.
of 13: But also remember that only half of the circles on each side are closed -- the other half open straight into the ocean.
of 13: Well, actually, the circle at 10 o'clock on the right ring has a set of tracks under it. You want to end up here eventually, but you can't just go straight there, because the hole that would get you there on the first pass is plugged.
of 13: That means you need to go from ring to ring.
of 13: There are only two places where closed circles line up with each other on the rings. (There are four tracks, but two lead to the water.)
of 13: Once you've placed the first peg, there's only one place you can put the second peg. That's because, of the two closed circles underneath the tracks, one of those is the circle you just came from.
of 13: To start, you have to put a peg in the first hole you'll reach on the left wheel (at the 8-o'clock position) or the third one (at 12 o'clock).
of 13: If you tried putting a peg at 8 o'clock on the left wheel and then worked out the rest of the puzzle, you'd realize that solution is a dead-end.
of 13: So put the first peg in the left wheel at 12 o'clock.
of 13: That means the next peg has to go in the right wheel at 10 o'clock.
of 13: The final peg goes in the left wheel at 2 o'clock.
