Myst V: End of Ages Hints
What is the purpose of the pedestals in each of the ages?
of 15: First, in the Great Shaft, you may find some pedestals that hold linking books, with pictures on their right-hand side. I've covered those in a separate set of hints -- the pedestals I'm talking about are the ones you'll see in Direbo and the ages that follow from there.
of 15: As with the slates, you may want to take some time to explore the ages. The game will reveal more about how these pedestals work as you need to know it.
of 15: In part, the pedestals are a place to hold the slates. You can pick up the slate by clicking on it, if it's already sitting on a pedestal. You can also leave the slate that you're already holding onto by clicking on the pedestal.
of 15: Remember that Esher warned you the Bahro would pick up the slates if you drop them. So putting the slate on any of the pedestals that you see will keep the Bahro from picking them up.
of 15: But that's not all the pedestals do. Esher says that you can touch the pedestals to teleport (or "link") -- for the Bahro version of the linking books.
of 15: You should first see a couple of lit symbols on the pedestals in Direbo and the big pedestals at the start of each age. The symbol in the lower-left corner of the pedestal's base takes you from Direbo to the start of anoother age -- that's the one that's sort of shaped like the slate itself. (By the "base", I mean the part that holds the slate in place, just below where the slate is/was resting -- not the bottom of the stand near the ground.)
of 15: When you get to the start of an age, the symbol that brought you here will no longer be lit, but at least one more will be.
of 15: That's the symbol in the top-center section of the base of the pedestal -- the symbol that looks like an island or hill with three trees sticking out of it. You'll see that same symbol on the first pedestal in each of the four main ages you'll visit. Clicking on that takes you back to Direbo, wherever you are.
of 15: You will also see more symbols similar to these as you progress through each age. You may want to try solving some of the puzzles before reading ahead, as this will be clearer to you within the context of a specific puzzle.
of 15: Specifically, you will find smaller pedestals with just a single lit symbol on the bottom (the one shaped like the slate) as well as a larger glowing picture on top. You can click on the slate-shaped symbol to be transported back to the start of the age.
of 15: Also doesn't it look like the smaller pedestals could also hold your slate?
of 15: Putting the slate on these pedestals -- whether you do it yourself or instruct the Bahro to do it for you -- activates another glowing symbol back on the main pedestal, matching the one on the smaller pedestal.
of 15: Clicking on that new symbol will teleport you from the main pedestal to the smaller pedestal.
of 15: The slate doesn't have to be currently resting on that smaller pedestal -- once you've *ever* put the slate on the pedestal, the corresponding teleportation symbol will always remain active. You can -- and sometimes will -- need to teleport to one of the smaller pedestals even when the slate isn't waiting for you on the other side.
of 15: The final, lower-right, section of the symbols is reserved for what's known as the "Keep" -- another soap-bubble type area at the end of each age. But its purpose is just the same as all the other symbols -- it teleports you to another place in the age.
