Myst V: End of Ages Hints
How do I work the four similar consoles in the red control room?
of 11: If you've already supplied power to them, you may be able to figure how the consoles work just by experimenting with them.
of 11: Each of the four devices, except one, seem to basically be the same -- they have some sort of screen with several switches on the right side, and a few additional controls on the left. The one on the far right as you're entering the room has a broken screen, but it's otherwise the same as the rest.
of 11: The theme of this age seems to be astronomy, and you see stars in the screen on the right at each console.
of 11: And if you look outside, you'll notice some very elaborate telescopes on the islands surrounding you. So it's probably a good guess that these are telescope controls.
of 11: On the controls on the left, there's also some kind of circular "map" with two nearby sliders that you can move to aim the telescope -- one on the left side of the map and one on the top.
of 11: As you move those sliders, you should see the circles on the map move. (The stars don't move -- just the separate map for now.) Each telescope is limited to a particular quadrant of the sky (the one quarter of the circle that is *not* shaded red), and the concentric circles show where the telescope is looking.
of 11: You'll also see some symbols below that map showing the exact coordinates of where the telescope is aimed.
of 11: Those symbols are basically numbers -- 0 to 24 -- which will help you find and remember where each telescope is aiming. I'll sometimes refer to these symbols by their numeric equivalents, summarized in the picture below.
of 11: Once you've selected a set of coordinates, press the flashing green button on the top of the device. The telescope will then move into its specified position.
of 11: The three switches above the actual viewscreen control how much to zoom in to wherever the telescope is pointed.
of 11: You'll learn more about what the telescopes are actually used for as you encounter the puzzles later in this age.
